It puts more emphasis on considered production, wearing clothes for longer, caring for and repairing them, and reusing what already exists. It is a broad set of values and practices—not a particular fabric, price range, certification, or guarantee that a brand is sustainable.
What does slow fashion mean?
Researcher and professor of sustainability, design, and fashion systems Kate Fletcher defines slow fashion as “Fashion conceived of from a different starting point to growth, consumerist fashion.” In practical terms, that means shifting attention away from buying more and faster toward how clothes are made, used, cared for, repaired, and passed on. Fletcher’s work frames slow fashion as a change in values and goals, not simply a slower production schedule.
There is no single universal slow-fashion checklist or certification. Handmade, locally made, expensive, natural-fibre, or minimalist clothing is not automatically slow fashion. Fletcher cautions that a high price alone does not prove that care was taken in production. Likewise, a brand’s sustainability claim needs specific evidence about its practices.
Is the fashion industry making progress?
Progress is mixed: circular approaches are developing, but waste remains high and recycled inputs are limited. Current figures also describe different things, so they should not be treated as interchangeable measures of clothing alone.

- Textile waste: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reported in October 2025 that 92 million tonnes of textile waste are generated annually. This is textile waste, not a statistic limited to discarded clothing. UNEP’s report also states that recycled sources supplied 8% of textile fibres in 2023; less than 1% of the total fibre market came from textile-to-textile recycling.
- Brand disclosures: Fashion Revolution’s 2024 review of 250 large brands found an average disclosure score of 18%. The review reported that 47% disclosed a Science Based Targets Initiative target covering their entire value chain, while 43% disclosed progress against such targets. It also found that the progress of 57% of reviewed brands was unclear. These are findings about public disclosure by selected brands, not scores of their overall sustainability or ethics. - Circular systems: In a September 2026 update, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation said textile-to-textile recycling remains below 1% and that more than 80% of the textile waste stream is still incinerated, landfilled, or lost to the environment. The Foundation describes resale, rental, repair, and remaking as growing faster than new product sales, while noting barriers including thin margins, operational complexity, and fragmented logistics. No named statistic in these sources measures the worldwide adoption rate or total size of slow fashion as a movement. The available evidence instead points to a practical tension: circular models are gaining attention, but waste outcomes, low recycling levels, and incomplete brand disclosures remain substantial challenges.
How can you make clothes last longer?
Start with what you own
Before buying something, see whether a garment you already have can meet the need. Try a different combination, wear it again, or store and care for it so it remains usable. UNEP encourages people to value and get creative with the clothes they already have rather than buying more. UNEP’s practical guidance includes shopping your wardrobe and supporting circular models.

Repair or alter before replacing
A loose button or small tear may be manageable with basic mending; a more involved repair or fit change can go to a tailor or repair service. Use supplies you already have if possible. The Natural History Museum’s clothes-mending guide explains basic repairs and what a repair kit can include. Buying a kit is optional, not a requirement for adopting slow-fashion habits.
Pass clothes on thoughtfully
If an item no longer works for you, consider whether someone else can use it through a swap, resale, donation, or other reuse route. The most suitable option depends on the garment’s condition and local options; passing something on does not guarantee it will be reused.

How can you shop more sustainably?
When you do need clothing, choose a route that fits the item, your budget, and how you expect to use it. UNEP suggests swapping, renting for special occasions, shopping vintage, buying second-hand online, and choosing durable, high-quality clothing when buying new. Its recommendations also support considering sustainable brands or materials when possible, without treating one fibre or label as best in every situation.

For brand claims, look for concrete, current information rather than relying on a price, premium positioning, or broad label. Disclosure is a starting point for scrutiny, not proof of sustainability: a brand may publish information without demonstrating that its overall impacts are low.

Who is responsible for changing fashion?
Individual choices can support longer use and circular options, but shoppers cannot solve an industry-wide problem alone. UNEP says governments, businesses, and consumers all have roles and places much of the responsibility for making the sector more sustainable on governments and businesses. For readers managing a clothing budget, slow fashion is most useful as a way to make considered choices within real constraints—not as a reason to spend beyond what is affordable.
