Relationship management in banking is the ongoing work of understanding and serving customers, developing appropriate business with them, and keeping the information and oversight needed to manage the relationship’s risks. It includes both people—such as relationship managers—and the bank’s processes and systems for customer information, service, and monitoring.

What relationship management includes

The term has two connected meanings. It can describe how a bank maintains its relationship with a customer, and it can describe the institutional processes and systems used to manage information about that customer and their banking relationships.

  • Customer-facing work: understanding a customer’s needs, providing service, and developing suitable banking business.
  • Information and controls: maintaining customer records, supporting due diligence, reviewing credit or other risks, and monitoring the relationship over time.

These are not separate goals: useful service depends on understanding the customer, while responsible banking requires the bank to maintain appropriate records and oversight.

What a bank relationship manager does

In corporate and commercial banking, a relationship manager may serve as the customer’s primary contact. Duties can combine service, business development, and risk responsibilities. Bangladesh Bank’s sample corporate-banking job description includes customer service, understanding the customer’s business, marketing and cross-selling, timely customer reviews, maintaining accurate risk grades, following up on financial statements and loan payments, and meeting internal and external requirements. It is an example of one role description, not a universal job specification. Bangladesh Bank’s Guidelines on Credit Risk Management

The balance of these duties depends on the bank and the customer segment. A corporate relationship can involve lending and regular financial reviews; a personal or retail relationship may be organized differently. The title “relationship manager” alone does not establish a standard set of duties across all banks.

How banking CRM differs from the manager’s role

Banking CRM can refer to the systems and processes that help a bank keep information connected to a customer relationship. It is broader than a contact list: records may link a customer’s identity with related parties, due diligence information, accounts, products, and reporting.

For example, Bangladesh Bank’s 2024 core banking system controls describe a CRM module that supports customer and related-party information, KYC and due diligence records, reporting, and customer IDs that can connect multiple products to one customer. This is a regulator’s description of system capabilities, not a claim that every bank uses the same CRM design. Bangladesh Bank’s CBS Features and Controls 2024

Why risk oversight is part of relationship management

A bank’s relationship work is not only about sales or customer service. It can also include credit reviews, keeping customer information current, due diligence, and monitoring for risks. The exact legal and supervisory requirements vary by jurisdiction.

In the United States, an interagency statement issued July 6, 2022 describes a risk-based approach to customer due diligence for banks subject to the Bank Secrecy Act. It explains that banks should understand the nature and purpose of customer relationships to develop risk profiles, conduct ongoing monitoring, identify and report suspicious transactions, and maintain or update information on a risk basis. The statement also cautions that customers in the same category do not automatically share one uniform risk profile. Joint U.S. interagency statement on customer relationships and due diligence

The agencies said their statement did not change existing BSA/AML legal or regulatory requirements or establish new supervisory expectations. It is U.S.-specific guidance and should not be treated as a rule for banks in other countries. The agencies also stated that banks complying with applicable requirements and effectively managing relationship-specific risks are neither prohibited nor discouraged from serving customers of a particular class or type.

How the pieces fit together

Part of the practice What it does
Relationship manager or customer team Provides a point of contact, understands customer needs, supports service, and may develop appropriate business.
CRM and customer records Connects information about identity, related parties, products, and due diligence so the bank can manage the relationship.
Risk and compliance processes Supports reviews, monitoring, and other controls appropriate to the customer and applicable rules.

Effective relationship management brings these parts together: the bank aims to understand and serve the customer while maintaining the information and oversight needed to manage the relationship responsibly.
