Bootstrapping in business means starting and growing a company primarily with the founder’s own resources while limiting outside capital. It can preserve the founder’s control, but it also puts more financial risk on the founder and may constrain how quickly the business can grow.

What bootstrapping means

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) describes self-funding as using resources such as personal savings, support from family and friends, or retirement funds to finance a business. Bootstrapping is a funding approach—not a business model or a guarantee of success. In general, the founder relies mainly on available resources and keeps outside financing limited. The SBA’s business funding guidance notes that self-funding can let owners retain control, while making them personally responsible for the financial risk.

Using a personal credit card or borrowing from family does not automatically make a business self-funded in the same sense as relying on savings: borrowed money still has to be repaid. The key question is how much of the company’s capital comes from the founder’s resources versus outside financing, and what obligations come with each source.

Common ways founders bootstrap

  • Personal savings or income: The founder contributes money saved or earned elsewhere. Set a firm limit on what you can afford to lose rather than treating all personal savings as available business capital.
  • Revenue from early customers: A small, sellable offer can generate cash to support the next stage of the business. This depends on customers being willing to pay and on the timing of receipts relative to expenses.
  • Family or friends: Their support may be a gift or a loan; clarify which before accepting money, including whether repayment is expected and on what terms.
  • Retirement funds: The SBA includes retirement assets among possible self-funding sources, but cautions that early withdrawals may have fees or penalties and consequences for retirement savings. Consult the plan administrator and a personal financial adviser before considering this route.

Bootstrapping does not require avoiding every outside dollar. A founder may use limited financing while still relying primarily on personal resources, but should account for repayment, interest, and any ownership given up when evaluating the full funding mix.

How to bootstrap a startup without losing sight of cash

A lean launch can help a founder learn whether customers will pay before committing to a larger build. SCORE’s guidance on bootstrapping recommends a minimum viable product (MVP)—a limited version of an offer designed to test demand. An MVP is useful only if it tests a real customer need; it does not guarantee product-market fit or future funding. SCORE Maine’s bootstrapping guidance discusses this approach.

  1. Estimate the funding need. List startup costs, recurring expenses, and the point at which the business could reasonably begin receiving revenue. The SBA advises calculating how much money is needed before choosing a funding source. Start with the SBA’s funding guidance.
  2. Separate essential costs from later improvements. Identify what is necessary to deliver a testable offer and what can wait until customer demand is clearer. Staging spending can reduce the amount of personal capital exposed at the outset.
  3. Test a small offer. Build or provide the smallest credible version that lets prospective customers decide whether to pay. Track what people actually buy, not only expressions of interest.
  4. Monitor cash timing. Track money coming in and going out, including bills due before customer payments arrive. A business can be viable on paper and still run short of cash if expenses come due first.
  5. Review the plan as evidence changes. If demand, costs, or timing differ from expectations, revisit the spending plan and whether another funding source is needed.

Bootstrapping vs. borrowing vs. equity investment

The right choice depends on the business’s funding need, growth ambitions, risk tolerance, and how much ownership and decision-making the founder is willing to share. SCORE presents these as factors to weigh when comparing funding options. SCORE’s funding comparison outlines general tradeoffs.

Decision factor Bootstrapping Borrowing Equity investment
Ownership and control Founder generally retains ownership and control. No ownership transfer is inherent, though lenders may impose obligations and repayment terms. Investors generally receive an ownership share and may participate in decisions.
Cost and financial exposure No loan interest on money not borrowed and no investor dilution, but the founder’s resources are at risk. Interest and repayment add costs; the business needs the capacity to make payments. Capital is exchanged for ownership; investors may expect an eventual exit or liquidity event.
Growth capacity Limited cash can slow expansion or force the business to pass up opportunities. Can finance a defined need when the business can qualify and reliably repay. Can provide capital for growth, alongside investor involvement and possible dilution in later fundraising.
Best fit depends on Available founder resources, personal risk tolerance, and desired control. Amount needed, financing cost, qualification, and reliable repayment capacity. Growth goals, willingness to share ownership, and fit with prospective investors.

These are general distinctions, not individualized financing advice. Compare actual terms before deciding: a loan’s rate and repayment schedule, an investor’s ownership and decision rights, and the personal resources at stake in a self-funded plan can change the practical tradeoff.

What historical startup-funding surveys can—and can’t—tell you

In a 2019 report, SCORE said a survey of roughly 1,000 U.S. small-business startups found that 78% of respondents relied on personal funds and income from another job to get their startup off the ground. The same report said 42% of surveyed entrepreneurs started with less than $5,000 in cash reserves. These are historical respondent figures, not current estimates or universal rates. When bootstrapping may—or may not—fit

Bootstrapping may suit a founder who can start with modest capital, values control, and is comfortable with measured growth. It may be a poor fit if the business requires substantial upfront investment, must scale quickly, or needs cash immediately to fulfill opportunities. SCORE’s current funding-options guidance frames the choice around the business model, growth ambitions, risk tolerance, and desired ownership. See SCORE’s funding-options overview.
