What Happened to Norwegian’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners?

Norwegian ended its Dreamliner operation as it exited long-haul flying, but its reports do not trace every former 787 to a new operator or final fate.

Norwegian first grounded part of its long-haul fleet during the COVID-19 crisis, then ended long-haul flying as part of a broader restructuring. It terminated agreements for five 787s it had not yet received and, in 2021, redelivered 11 owned Dreamliners. Norwegian’s reports do not establish where every former aircraft went afterward.

From pandemic grounding to an end to long-haul flying

These were two distinct decisions. The first was an emergency response to travel restrictions; the second was a lasting change in Norwegian’s business model.

March 2020: initial flight cuts

On 12 March 2020, Norwegian announced it would ground 40 percent of its long-haul fleet and cancel up to 25 percent of short-haul flights amid the escalating coronavirus situation and new travel restrictions. That figure described the announced initial action; it does not mean that only 40 percent of the Dreamliners were grounded over the longer term. Norwegian’s 12 March 2020 announcement framed the cuts as a response to the crisis.

June 2020: remaining 787 orders cancelled

Norwegian’s 2020 annual report says it notified Boeing in June that it was terminating purchase agreements for the five remaining Boeing 787s on order. These were aircraft it had yet to receive, not part of the count of owned Dreamliners later redelivered. The report also records that Norwegian filed a legal claim seeking return of pre-delivery payments and compensation related to the 737 MAX grounding and 787 engine issues. Norwegian’s 2020 annual report documents the order termination and claim.

January 2021: Norwegian announces its long-haul exit

On 14 January 2021, Norwegian announced a plan to concentrate on a European short-haul network using narrow-body aircraft and discontinue long-haul operations. This was the strategic break from the Dreamliner business, rather than simply another temporary pandemic grounding. The plan is recorded in the events-after-reporting-period section of Norwegian’s 2020 annual report.

How many Norwegian-owned Dreamliners were redelivered?

Norwegian’s 2021 annual report says it redelivered three owned Boeing 787-8s and eight owned Boeing 787-9s during the year:

Boeing 787-8 3
Boeing 787-9 8
Total 11

The report also lists four owned aircraft remaining in the group at year-end, but the cited passage does not identify them as 787s. The redelivery figures cover owned aircraft; by themselves, they do not account for every aircraft Norwegian operated under lease or identify the later history of each individual Dreamliner. Norwegian’s 2021 annual report provides the owned-aircraft counts.

Did Norwegian’s former 787s go to Norse Atlantic?

The reports cited here do not establish that Norwegian’s former Dreamliners transferred to Norse Atlantic Airways. Norse is a separate airline, and its own 2024 annual report describes leases of nine Dreamliners from AerCap—six 787-9s and three 787-8s—and six from BOC Aviation. It also says Norse returned three subleased 787-8s to the head lessor in the first quarter of 2025. Those lease and return records do not show that the aircraft were formerly Norwegian’s. Norse Atlantic’s annual reports document its separate fleet arrangements.

What is known about the aircraft’s later fate?

Norwegian’s company-level reports establish the cancellation of five unreceived 787 orders and the redelivery of 11 owned aircraft in 2021. They do not provide a fleet-by-fleet account of where every former Norwegian 787 went, whether it entered another operator’s fleet, remained in storage, or was scrapped. Without aircraft-specific records, none of those outcomes can be attributed to all, or any particular, former Norwegian Dreamliner.
