If a cancelled order still arrives, save the cancellation and delivery records, then contact the retailer in writing. Ask it to confirm whether the cancellation and refund stand and, if it wants the item back, to arrange a return or collection and explain who pays. A product you originally ordered does not automatically become free merchandise because it was shipped or delivered after cancellation; the outcome depends on your location, whether the seller accepted the cancellation, the shipping timeline, and the purchase terms and law.
What to do when a cancelled order is delivered
- Save the records. Keep the order confirmation, cancellation request, seller’s acknowledgement, refund confirmation, tracking messages, and delivery details. A photo of the parcel and its label can also help establish what happened and when.
- Check whether the seller accepted the cancellation. A request sent to the seller is not necessarily confirmation that the order or contract was cancelled. Keep the response and timestamp, and check whether tracking indicates the item had already shipped.
- Write to the retailer. State when you cancelled and when the item arrived. Ask the seller to confirm the refund status and provide instructions if it wants the item returned. If a return is required, ask it to arrange collection or provide a prepaid return method where appropriate under its policy and local rules.
- Check the payment and local rules. If a refund is due but does not arrive, use the seller’s complaint process and ask your card issuer or a relevant consumer advice service about possible next steps. Remedies and timelines vary by purchase and jurisdiction.
Do not assume that the rules for truly unsolicited merchandise settle the case. The Federal Trade Commission says recipients generally do not have to pay for goods they never ordered and can keep unsolicited merchandise. Why the answer depends on the cancellation and shipping timeline
The important facts include where you live, whether the seller accepted the cancellation, whether the item had already shipped, whether a refund was issued, and whether the purchase was a distance sale such as an online, phone, or mail order. A cancellation request, an accepted cancellation, and a parcel already in transit are not necessarily the same event. Keep the seller’s written response so you can establish what it agreed to and when.
Rules in the United States
The FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule covers most products ordered online, by mail, or by phone. In general, a seller must ship within the time it promised, or within 30 days if it stated no shipping time. If it cannot meet the deadline, it must notify the buyer and offer the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a full refund. The FTC also says a seller must promptly refund when a customer exercises an applicable option to cancel before shipment under the Rule; whether that requirement applies depends on the transaction and what happened before shipment. The FTC’s separate guidance on unordered goods says a business cannot send merchandise a consumer never ordered and then demand payment. That is distinct from a case involving an item the consumer originally ordered. FTC guidance on billing disputes and unordered products
Rules in the United Kingdom
For many online, mail, and telephone purchases, UK consumers can cancel a distance purchase without giving a reason by telling the seller within 14 days of receiving the item, then have another 14 days to return it. Exceptions apply. The seller must refund standard delivery; it generally does not have to refund the extra cost of a more expensive delivery option beyond the standard rate. Citizens Advice Wales says that where a business arranged the courier, the seller is responsible for resolving delivery problems and consumers should contact the seller. If the package does not match your order history, check your marketplace account and contact the marketplace using its official app or website. The FTC warns that an unexpected package can be part of a brushing scam: a seller may use someone’s details to send a low-cost item and create fake reviews.
