Britannia Airways did not disappear in a sudden shutdown: its name was replaced as the airline moved through successive TUI brands. It became Thomsonfly in 2004, joined with First Choice Airways to form Thomson Airways in 2008, and that airline rebranded as TUI in 2017. The Britannia name ended, but the airline operation continued under successor branding.

How Britannia Airways began

Britannia was itself a renamed airline. Newcastle International Airport’s history of TUI says Euravia took the Britannia Airways name in 1964, inspired by the Bristol Britannia aircraft. Aviation Archives gives the date as 16 August 1964.

Newcastle International Airport’s TUI timeline and Aviation Archives’ account of Britannia describe the early history.

Britannia’s transition into TUI’s UK airline business

Date Brand or name What happened
2000 Britannia Airways within Thomson Travel Group TUI acquired Thomson Travel Group, which included Britannia, as part of the formation of TUI UK, according to Newcastle International Airport.
2002 onward Britannia operations being integrated with Thomsonfly Aviation Archives says a wider “World of TUI” airline rebranding began in 2002 and Britannia’s operations were gradually integrated into Thomsonfly. This is an account of a gradual branding and operational process, not a stated legal merger date.
2004 Thomsonfly Ltd The UK Civil Aviation Authority lists Britannia Airways under operator name changes, with Thomsonfly Ltd as the new name. Newcastle International Airport also dates the rebrand to 2004.
2008 Thomson Airways Thomsonfly and First Choice Airways merged to form Thomson Airways, according to Newcastle International Airport.
2017 TUI Thomson Airways rebranded as TUI, alongside Thomson Holidays, according to Newcastle International Airport.

Did the airline stop operating when the Britannia name ended?

No. The CAA’s 2004 entry records a name change to Thomsonfly Ltd, and TUI’s 2005 annual report describes Britannia Airways UK as trading under the Thomsonfly brand. That report gives a snapshot of the airline in the 2005 summer season: 34 aircraft, flights from 17 British airports to 49 destinations, and 96% of passengers being customers of group-owned tour operators. These are company-reported figures for that season, not current statistics.

TUI Group’s 2005 annual report supplies the contemporary operating figures. They show that the new name was in use while the airline remained part of the group’s holiday travel business.

What can—and cannot—be said about continuity

The documented history supports a clear brand and business sequence: Britannia became Thomsonfly, Thomsonfly merged with First Choice Airways to form Thomson Airways, and Thomson Airways later became TUI. A name change, gradual integration, merger, and later rebrand are distinct events; they should not be collapsed into one claim that Britannia simply “became” today’s airline in a single step.

The cited historical accounts and CAA name-change entry do not establish the exact legal-entity or air operator certificate continuity at every stage. The safest conclusion is that the Britannia name ended while its airline business continued through successor branding and a later merger.
