Why did the original Pan Am go out of business?
Pan Am’s collapse came amid financial pressure and an unsuccessful effort to reorganize. A U.S. Department of Justice-hosted legal analysis identifies the recession that began in July 1990 and Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait the following month as major immediate pressures on the airline industry and Pan Am. It concludes those factors played a greater, more immediate role in Pan Am’s financial trouble than the Lockerbie bombing; they should not be treated as a single-cause explanation. During the reorganization effort, Delta acquired Pan Am’s Atlantic assets for $416 million. The transfer was completed around November 1, 1991. On December 3, Delta decided it would not provide further funding or invest in Pan Am II. Pan Am ceased all operations the following day. When did Pan Am stop flying?
The original airline ceased operations on December 4, 1991. That date refers to the original Pan American World Airways, not every later business that used the Pan Am name.

Was there another Pan Am airline?
Yes. A separate carrier using the Pan Am name later operated scheduled flights. The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that Pan American World Airways, Inc. and Pan American Airways Corp.—formerly Carnival Airlines—filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 26, 1998, and that scheduled flight operations ceased on February 27. Who owns the Pan Am name now?
Pan American World Airways, LLC, doing business as Pan Am Brands, is associated with the current brand and its licensing activity. The Canadian Intellectual Property Office lists the LLC as the registered owner of a particular PAN AM design mark and records a change from Pan American World Airways, Inc. to the LLC in 2023. Those records do not establish that one company owns every Pan Am-related asset or every mark worldwide. Trademark ownership applies to particular marks and jurisdictions; it is also distinct from ownership of the defunct airline, its historical assets, or companies that later operated under the name. Current Pan Am materials present brand initiatives that include travel, hotels, FBOs, and the Pan Am Journeys private-jet collection. Its official site also promotes a licensed LEGO Douglas DC-3 collector set. These are brand and licensing activities, not evidence that the original airline has resumed scheduled service.
