Farm family net worth is the value of a farm operator household’s farm and nonfarm assets minus all of its farm and nonfarm debts. It is a snapshot of household wealth—not annual income, farm-business profit, or the amount of cash the family can readily spend.
What counts as farm family net worth?
USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) calls this measure farm household net worth or wealth. Its formula is: “Farm household net worth (wealth) = Farm net worth + Nonfarm net worth.” USDA ERS glossary
In practical terms, add the household’s farm and nonfarm assets, then subtract its farm and nonfarm liabilities. The household measure is broader than farm equity alone.
| Measure | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Farm net worth (farm equity) | Farm assets minus farm liabilities. Cornell Cooperative Extension summarizes it as “Total Farm Assets less Total Farm Liabilities.” Cornell Cooperative Extension farm business summary |
| Farm family or household net worth | Farm and nonfarm assets minus all farm and nonfarm liabilities. Cornell describes family net worth as total assets less all reported liabilities. Cornell Cooperative Extension farm business summary |
Examples of assets and debts
Farm assets may include farmland and buildings, equipment, financial assets, and other farm assets. Household assets outside the farm can include cash, bank accounts, certificates of deposit, money-market accounts, retirement accounts, stocks and mutual funds, life-insurance cash value, and other property. Debts can include farm real-estate and operating debt as well as household obligations such as credit-card and car debt. USDA ERS glossary

What do U.S. farm household wealth figures show?
USDA ERS reported a 2024 median wealth of $1.6 million for U.S. farm households and a 2024 median total wealth of $3.9 million for households operating commercial farms. These are medians, not averages: half of the households in the relevant group are above the median and half below. USDA ERS, Ag and Food Statistics: Charting the Essentials
ERS defines commercial farms as those with gross cash farm income of at least $350,000, as well as nonfamily farms in its farm-type glossary. The cited household wealth statistics concern principal operator households of family farms; use the population label shown with the statistic rather than treating it as a figure for every person who farms. The 2025 edition of America’s Farms and Ranches at a Glance used a $205,124 median household wealth threshold for 2024 comparisons, adjusted to 2024 dollars. That is a comparison threshold, not the median wealth of farm households. USDA ERS, America’s Farms and Ranches at a Glance, 2025 edition
Why older figures may not match
A 2022 article cited an average U.S. farm-household wealth figure of $1,714,559 for 2020 and a $2.8 million median for commercial farm households. Those are historical figures, not current estimates. The 2020 figure is an average while the 2024 figures above are medians, so they are not like-for-like comparisons; a small number of very high-wealth households can pull an average upward. The same 2022 article reported a 14% farm-debt-to-farm-assets figure based on USDA ERS data from February 2022. It is historical and measures a different relationship from household net worth; it should not be presented as a current household debt level. Successful Farming, 2022
Does a high net worth mean a farm family has plenty of cash?
No. Wealth is a balance-sheet stock measured at a point in time; income is money received over a period. A household can have substantial net worth because it owns farmland or equipment while having limited cash available for bills, operations, or scheduled loan payments. Assets such as land may be valuable but are not necessarily liquid or readily accessible.

Debt payments also matter. A demanding repayment schedule can constrain a farm’s flexibility and its ability to finance investments, even when the household has significant equity. USDA ERS also cautions that household well-being is not equivalent to the financial performance of the associated farm business or the farm sector. Most farm households operate residence farms and rely on off-farm income for at least some living expenses; off-farm sources are the main income contributors for most operator households. - Choose a valuation date. Net worth is a snapshot, so use one date for the asset and debt inventory.
- List farm assets. Include the household’s share of farmland, buildings, equipment, financial assets, and other farm assets.
- List nonfarm assets. Include relevant household cash, savings, investments, retirement accounts, and other assets.
- List all liabilities. Separate farm debts from household debts, but include both in the family total.
- Apply consistent ownership shares. For jointly held property or farm wealth shared with other households, count only the portion attributable to the operator household. ERS uses this approach in its household estimates. USDA ERS glossary
- Subtract total liabilities from total assets. Keep the farm-only equity subtotal separate from the broader household net-worth result.
A ledger or worksheet can help keep categories organized. Cornell’s farm business summary presents farm and nonfarm assets and liabilities separately, then reports farm equity and family net worth as distinct totals. Cornell Cooperative Extension farm business summary

What makes a net-worth comparison meaningful?
Before comparing two figures, check that they describe the same:
- Year: asset values and debts change over time.
- Population: all farm operator households, family farms, commercial-farm households, and nonfarm households are not interchangeable groups.
- Statistic: a mean (average) and a median describe wealth differently.
- Scope: farm-only equity is not the same as total household wealth, which includes nonfarm assets and debts.
For a family’s own financial picture, also consider how liquid its assets are, when debt payments are due, and how much cash is available for debt service and living expenses. Net worth depends on complete records, ownership allocation, the valuation date, and valuation assumptions. The cited sources define broad asset and debt categories but do not prescribe a universal appraisal method for tax, lending, estate, or sale purposes; consult an appropriately qualified financial, accounting, legal, or valuation professional for those decisions.
