Boeing’s Mesa, Arizona, site is best known for producing AH-64 Apache helicopters. It also supports aircraft flight testing and engineering, makes components used at other Boeing facilities, and has a range of technical and business roles. Not every aircraft or component associated with Mesa is assembled there.
What is Boeing’s main work in Mesa?
The site’s central activity is the AH-64 Apache program. Boeing’s April 2024 Mesa overview identifies Mesa as an Apache production location. At a September 7, 2021, City of Mesa Economic Development Advisory Board meeting, Boeing representatives described Apache development, production, fielding, and testing as the core of the site’s vertical-lift work.
The same 2021 meeting record reported that more than 2,400 Apaches had been delivered from Mesa across the A, D, and E model programs. Christina Upah, identified in the minutes as Mesa Site Leader Director of Operations, gave that cumulative figure; it is not an annual production rate.
What aircraft testing and engineering happen there?
Boeing’s April 2024 overview identifies flight testing in Mesa for the AH-64E Apache and AH-6 Little Bird. Boeing representatives also described Chinook flight testing and engineering at the site during the 2021 City of Mesa meeting. That Chinook description is a dated account, not confirmation of the program’s current status in Mesa.

The site’s Arizona location has also been described as attractive for rotorcraft flight testing. In the 2021 minutes, Upah said: “We’re also doing the Chinook flight testing and engineering here in Mesa, which our weather here in Arizona, makes flight testing of rotorcraft products very attractive.”
What does Mesa make for other Boeing programs?
Beyond aircraft production, Boeing identifies Mesa centers of excellence in composites, electrical wiring, and metal fabrication. These capabilities produce parts and assemblies used in aircraft built elsewhere. At the 2021 City of Mesa meeting, Boeing representatives cited electrical wire bundles and composite parts supporting other company work, including F/A-18-related and commercial-aircraft programs. This is component fabrication—not evidence that those aircraft are assembled in Mesa.

What other functions and jobs are associated with the site?
A 2021 City of Mesa record described enterprise services, corporate work, global staffing, facilities and asset management, indirect supply-chain functions, and a global security operations center at the facility. That list reflects what Boeing representatives described at the time; current sources do not establish whether each function remains in Mesa.

How large is Boeing’s Mesa operation?
Boeing calls Mesa its largest Arizona footprint, but its current Arizona overview reports statewide—not Mesa-only—totals: more than 4,800 Boeing employees and 570 suppliers. The company’s Arizona careers overview was accessed October 8, 2026.

For a dated Mesa-specific reference, Boeing representatives told the City of Mesa in 2021 that approximately 4,000 employees were tied to the Mesa site, out of approximately 4,300 Boeing employees across Arizona. Those are historical figures, not a current headcount. The available current sources do not provide a Mesa-only employee total.
Other figures also need their dates and scope attached. Boeing’s April 2024 Mesa overview said the worldwide Apache fleet exceeded 1,290 helicopters, including nearly 500 in international fleets. These are fleet figures, not Mesa production or delivery totals.

When did Boeing’s Mesa presence begin?
Boeing’s April 2024 overview dates its Mesa presence to 1982. City of Mesa minutes from 2021 said the site was approaching its 40th anniversary in 2022 and described it as purpose-built for Apache work.
