The work also includes developing advanced wing-assembly processes with AMRC Cymru.
What Airbus makes in Wales
Broughton is Airbus’s principal Welsh manufacturing operation. Its central role is making and assembling wings for Airbus aircraft. That means the site contributes components to aircraft programmes whose design and other work may take place elsewhere; it is not accurate to treat all Airbus UK activity as work performed in Wales.
A concrete example is the Vietjet order announced by the UK Government on 30 October 2025: wings for 100 Airbus A321neo aircraft ordered by the airline are to be manufactured at Broughton, while design work is to be carried out at Airbus’s Filton site. UK Government announcement
What is changing at Broughton in 2026
On 21 September 2026, Airbus said it was converting its former A380 wing-production facility into an A321 production line to support the A320 Family backlog. The company expected the conversion to be complete by the end of 2026, so that date is a target rather than confirmation that the line is already finished.

Airbus said the refitted facility is planned to have six wing-production jigs, an equipping line and a paint shop. These are company-reported plans. The change repurposes a facility previously used for A380 wing production for the A321 programme. Airbus announcement, 21 September 2026
Jobs and the scale of the site
Airbus reported a Broughton workforce of around 6,000 and said it created around 480 new, high-value jobs at the site in 2026, including 250 in the refurbished factory. For historical context, a 2017 UK Government account said Broughton employed around 6,000 people and produced more than 1,000 wings a year. That annual output figure is dated and should not be read as a current production rate. UK Government account, 2017
Manufacturing development with AMRC Cymru
Airbus’s activity in Wales also extends to manufacturing-process development. AMRC Cymru, part of the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, is based in Broughton. The Welsh Government reported in April 2025 that the £20 million centre had helped more than 100 Welsh businesses since opening. It also said Airbus was developing advanced wing-assembly processes for next-generation single-aisle aircraft in a new facility on the Airbus site, with AMRC support. Welsh Government, April 2025

How Broughton fits into Airbus’s wider UK work
Airbus Operations Limited’s 2024 annual report describes UK operations spanning wing design, testing and manufacturing, as well as commercial-aircraft support and fuel-system and landing-gear work. It identifies Broughton as a major North Wales site, but does not assign every UK-wide activity to Broughton. The clearest description of Airbus in Wales is therefore its wing manufacturing and assembly at Broughton, alongside related process development—not every aerospace discipline carried out across the UK.
