Most kindergarteners need a school-approved backpack and a core set of classroom supplies: crayons, pencils, glue sticks, and folders. Beyond that, the exact list is set by each school and can change from year to year. Some schools also ask for headphones, child-safety scissors, tissues, or personal items such as a change of clothes. The reliable answer for any one child is the list their school sends home, and the safest budget rule is to buy what that list names and nothing more.
What appears on kindergarten lists most often
Across the published kindergarten lists reviewed for this guide, the same categories recur. A backpack is the most common request. Basic writing and art supplies follow: crayons, #2 pencils, glue sticks, and folders or a writing journal. Some lists add dry-erase markers, tissues, wipes, headphones, or scissors. Individual counts and brands vary, and no list is a national standard. Treat the categories as a checklist of what to look for, not a shopping cart to fill.
How several districts’ lists compare
The table below shows how the requirements differ. Where a list does not address an item, the cell says “not stated” rather than assuming a default. Only the Bloomington Public Schools and Clark County School District lists are identified as 2026–27 lists; the other lists do not state a school year.
| District (list year) | Backpack | Headphones | Other requests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chattahoochee/Forsyth (not stated) | Backpack requested | Headphones requested | Three 24-count crayon packs, pre-sharpened #2 pencils, glue sticks, child safety scissors, fine-tip dry-erase markers, a primary writing journal |
| Saratoga City School District (not stated) | Backpack with no wheels | Headphones requested | Classroom materials; healthy snack, water bottle, PE sneakers, art smock, and change of clothes listed as additional needs. Families who bought the offered School Toolbox kit do not need to buy the listed supplies again |
| Bloomington Public Schools (2026–27) | Sized so a two-pocket folder fits | Headphones requested | Crayons, glue sticks, pencils, and other supplies; some supplies should not be labeled |
| Clark County School District (2026–27) | Large enough for a folder | Over-ear headphones | Lunch box with ice packs only if the family packs lunch. The district says it provides necessary supplies, and listed extras may be appreciated |
| West Des Moines Community Schools (not stated) | No wheels (preferred) | Wired (preferred) | Latex-free supplies |
| Sycamore Community School District 427 (not stated) | Regular size, fits a binder; no rolling backpacks | Wired headphones | Gym shoes and a change of clothes |
| DC Public Schools, general K–2 list (not stated) | Backpack requested | Not stated | Pencils, crayons, glue, safety scissors, folders, notebooks |
These differences often reflect what the classroom does, which supplies the school already stocks, how materials are shared, and the teacher’s preferences. A list from one district tells you very little about another.

- TEACHER REQUESTED: You've asked for shorter pencils in the classroom, and now the perfect sized-pencil for young students is finally here; 4.5" Length delivers better control and promotes a more natural grip as recognized essential by experts in early learning handwriting
- JUST THE RIGHT SIZE: Short pencils allow kids to use only what they need and there is less chance of breaking; fits in a small bag or compartment to always have the perfect pencil at hand
- ERGONOMIC DESIGN: Triangular shaped, oversized pencil (13/32”) is ideal for children in the early stages of their writing development; Easy for small hands to hold and helps teach correct pencil grip, or for mature hands to aid in a steady grip
- EXCLUSIVE #2 GRAPHITE FORMULA: Wide diameter (3.6mm) #2 lead minimizes breakage; Made with premium wood from responsibly sourced forests, providing smooth, even sharpening with minimal breakage
- SAFE FOR KIDS: Top quality, latex-free eraser provides easy, clean corrections without smudging; PMA certified non-toxic
Items that depend on your child and your school
Some requests are conditional or personal rather than classroom-wide. Check whether a list asks for any of the following before buying them:
- A lunch box or ice packs, which matter only if your child brings lunch from home.
- A water bottle or healthy snack, which some schools ask for and others handle differently.
- PE shoes or gym shoes, which are often needed for specific class days.
- A change of clothes, which families may be asked to keep in the backpack or cubby.
- An art smock, which is typically requested for messy activities.
Backpack rules that matter
Read the backpack line closely, because it is often the most specific requirement on the list. Two checks matter most. First, confirm whether the school’s folder or binder must fit inside, since a bag that looks right can be too small for the paperwork your child brings home. Second, confirm the style: some schools prohibit rolling bags entirely. Comfort and durability are not addressed by school lists, so judge those on your own terms, such as whether your child can carry the filled bag.

Headphones: check the connection before buying
Headphones are requested by several schools, but the style varies. Some lists specify wired headphones, others specify over-ear designs, and some do not say. Before buying, check the school’s wording on connection and style, and confirm whether the headphones will be used on a classroom device. A wireless pair that does not fit the school’s instructions can be a wasted purchase.
Labeling and shared supplies
Labeling rules are not uniform. Some lists ask families to label selected items with the child’s name. Others say supplies are shared or should not be labeled, as Bloomington Public Schools notes for some items. Follow the labeling instruction on the list for each item. If the list is silent, ask the school office instead of guessing.

Buying from the list without overspending
For a household budget, the main risk is buying before the list arrives or buying from a generic online roundup. Wait for the school’s list when possible, and build your shopping list from it line by line. Count what your child needs in the categories the school names. Check whether the school offers a supply kit, as Saratoga City School District does, because a kit can replace a separate set of purchases. Also keep the bag and clothing items separate from classroom supplies, since those are often the costliest and the most variable between schools.

- Check the backpack size and style against the folder, binder, and any no-wheels rule.
- Confirm headphone type and connection if the list names headphones.
- Read labeling and sharing instructions for each item.
- Ask the school office about anything unclear before you buy.
