The programs are not interchangeable: one lists bass fishing as a team-scholarship category, another ties a variable award to club-team participation, and the third offers broader outdoor and conservation scholarships. These examples are not a complete nationwide list, and each school should confirm current eligibility and award terms.
Which colleges offer fishing-related scholarships?
| College | What its official information says | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Southwestern Michigan College (SMC) | SMC says it provides financial support to student bass anglers and offers fishing scholarships for incoming freshmen. Its application lists bass fishing as a team scholarship category. SMC fishing team; SMC scholarship application information. | The application says awards are at department discretion, applicants must demonstrate experience or ability, and applying does not guarantee an award. Ask about current funding, amount, criteria and deadline. |
| Carson-Newman University | The university lists a variable “Eagle Anglers, Kayak Anglers or Eagle Archers” scholarship for participation on its club fishing teams or archery team. Carson-Newman scholarship information. | Confirm whether bass fishing qualifies in the relevant academic year, the award amount, participation expectations and application process. |
| University of Montevallo | The Outdoor Scholars Program describes awards of $1,000–$3,000 per student per year for four years, provided the student maintains a GPA of at least 2.5. It supports wildlife and conservation interests and includes a fishing team. Montevallo Outdoor Scholars Program. | Ask about current recruitment, eligibility, renewal criteria and how the scholarship relates to fishing-team participation. |
These are examples supported by official school information, not an exhaustive directory. Award terms and availability can change between academic years.
What counts as a bass fishing scholarship?
A competitive college fishing team does not necessarily mean the college awards an institutional scholarship for fishing. Separate the possible sources of support before comparing schools:
- Institutional scholarship: Aid awarded by the college, potentially tied to team participation, demonstrated fishing ability or a broader academic interest.
- Tournament scholarship: An award a student earns through a fishing circuit or competition. It is not automatically a college-funded team scholarship.
- Team support: Funds, sponsorships or fundraising that help with travel and competition expenses. This may reduce costs without paying tuition.
- External scholarship: Aid from a nonprofit or other outside organization, often based on academic or career goals rather than team membership.
For example, Texas A&M describes its fishing team as a student organization. Its members compete for tournament scholarships and championship berths, while sponsors can offset travel and competition expenses; the page does not say the university awards a bass-fishing scholarship. Texas A&M Fishing Club. Western Kentucky University likewise describes a student organization, tournament cash prizes and fundraising to help with costs—not a school scholarship. WKU Bass Fishing.

Tournament awards
Some collegiate fishing tournaments offer scholarship awards to competitors. Check the current rules to learn the award amount, who receives the funds and whether the money is paid to an angler, a school or an education account. A tournament award should not be treated as guaranteed college aid.
Fishery and natural-resource scholarships
The Bass Fishing Hall of Fame’s Fishery Management Scholarship Program supports high school and college bass anglers pursuing fisheries or natural-resource careers. In 2026, the Hall awarded six scholarships of $4,000 each. Recipients were enrolled undergraduate or graduate students whose majors or career goals included biology, aquatic ecology, fisheries, marine science or closely related natural-resource fields. This is an outside academic scholarship, not proof that a recipient’s college funds its fishing team. The Hall said details and application requirements for its 2027 program would be announced later in 2026. Bassmaster report on the 2026 awards.

How to evaluate an offer and apply
- Identify the funding source. Ask whether the money comes from the college, a tournament, an outside scholarship organization or team travel support.
- Check what qualifies. Find out whether the award is specifically for bass fishing, applies to any fishing-team member or is aimed at broader outdoor, wildlife or conservation interests.
- Get the current terms in writing. Confirm the amount, application deadline, selection criteria, renewal conditions and whether the award is available for your year of entry.
- Ask about participation and eligibility. Check whether team membership is selective and whether experience, recruiting, tournament participation, GPA or an academic major is expected.
- Find out what expenses are covered. Ask whether the award pays tuition, fees, housing or books, or instead helps with travel, entry fees, fuel or equipment.
- Review the effect on your total aid. Ask whether the award can be combined with merit or need-based aid and how it affects your financial-aid package.
Contact both the fishing coach or team adviser and the financial aid office: the team can explain participation and selection, while financial aid can clarify how funds are awarded and applied.

How college fishing aid fits into financial aid
Do not assume that a fishing award follows the same rules as a traditional varsity athletic scholarship. The NCAA’s general guidance says coaches award athletics scholarships—not the NCAA—and that amounts depend on sport, division and school. It also says academic scholarships and eligible need-based aid can contribute to a student’s overall financial package. Those are broad NCAA statements, not bass-fishing-specific rules; ask each college how its particular award works. NCAA scholarships and grants guidance.
The same NCAA page reports that more than $4 billion in athletics scholarships are awarded to over 180,000 student-athletes annually and that about 2% of high school athletes earn a college athletics scholarship. These figures describe athletics broadly, not bass fishing, and should not be used to estimate an individual angler’s odds.
