Re:

What All Those Confusing Dress Code Terms Really Mean

Dress-code labels are guides, not universal rules. Learn what common terms signal and how to use the invitation, event time, and venue to decide what to wear.

Dress-code terms describe a level of formality, not a universal uniform. To choose what to wear, start with the exact wording on the invitation, then consider the event’s time, venue, and any instructions from the host. The examples below draw on U.S.-oriented guidance from the Emily Post Institute and event guidance for New Zealand Government House; conventions can differ by country, culture, workplace, and event.

What dress-code terms mean—and why context matters

A dress code is a signal about the formality a host expects. The Governor-General of New Zealand’s Government House guide puts its purpose this way: “Dress codes are suggestions that give guests certainty they are dressed appropriately.” The guide describes its own codes as guidance for visitor comfort, not rules for admission. That is the policy of this venue, not a promise that every host or venue treats dress codes the same way.

Think of the terms as a rough formality ladder. In the Emily Post Institute’s guide, casual and dressy casual sit below semi-formal; business attire falls below black tie, while white tie is more formal than black tie. The categories can overlap in everyday use, so the label alone may not settle every question.

What to wear for each common dress code

Casual

Casual means informal and comfortable, while still clean and presentable. Emily Post’s examples include good jeans or khakis, a plain T-shirt, a polo, a casual button-down, and casual footwear. What feels appropriate can vary with the occasion and climate.

Dressy casual

Dressy casual is a step above everyday casual. Emily Post gives networking events, fundraisers, and a nice restaurant as examples of settings where it may be used. Options include a dress or dressy separates, or a sport coat or blazer with slacks. A shirt can be open at the collar; a polo or optional tie may also fit the guide’s examples.

Semi-formal

Emily Post places semi-formal above office wear but below a formal event. Its examples include a dark business suit with a dress shirt and tie, or a short afternoon or cocktail dress, a little black dress, a long dressy skirt and top, or dressy separates. These are examples rather than requirements for every guest. For a semi-formal event after 6 p.m., Emily Post advises leaning more formal.

Business formal or business wear

Business wear is work-oriented, and the actual standard depends on the employer or host. Government House describes business wear as appropriate for a formal office. Its examples include a business suit with shirt and tie, or a smart day dress, trousers, or skirt with a jacket. Emily Post advises checking and following the company’s dress code.

Cocktail or evening wear

Government House calls its evening-wear category “cocktail wear” or “After Five.” Its examples include a business suit with shirt and tie, or a cocktail or smart dress, skirt, or evening trousers. Emily Post also includes a cocktail dress among its semi-formal examples. Because the guides use different category names, follow the wording and instructions for your particular event rather than assuming “cocktail” always means exactly the same thing as “semi-formal.”

Black tie

Black tie means formal evening attire. Emily Post’s examples include a black tuxedo jacket with matching trousers, a formal white shirt, a black bow tie, and black dress shoes. For women, it lists a formal floor-length gown, a dressy cocktail dress, or a dressiest little black dress. Government House’s examples include a dinner jacket, trousers, shirt, and bow tie, as well as long gowns or skirts or evening trousers.

White tie

White tie sits above black tie in Emily Post’s formality ladder. The cited Emily Post guide passage establishes that distinction but does not give garment details, so use the host’s specific instructions rather than inferring an outfit from the label alone.

How to decode an unclear invitation

  1. Keep the host’s exact phrase in view. Do not silently substitute a different label just because it sounds similar.
  2. Check the time and venue. An evening event may call for more formality than a daytime one; Emily Post specifically advises leaning dressier for semi-formal events after 6 p.m. Government House, for its events, distinguishes day, business, evening, and black-tie categories.
  3. Read the rest of the invitation. Look for venue, employer, cultural, weather, or activity-specific instructions. A dress-code label may not account for practical details such as an outdoor setting or the event’s activities.
  4. Ask if the distinction would change what you wear. When the wording leaves a material question unresolved, contact the host or venue. That is practical advice, not a quoted rule from either guide.

Sources and scope

The examples and formality distinctions here come from two guides: the Emily Post Institute’s Attire Guide: Dress Codes from Casual to White Tie and the Governor-General of New Zealand’s Government House event dress-code guide, last updated 29 March 2021. They offer useful reference points, not universal rules for every country, culture, employer, or host.
