Shilen Patel’s long-term aim for West Bromwich Albion is a return to the Premier League. His interim target is to contend for the Championship’s top six, but he has also stressed that promotion cannot be assumed or bought at any cost. His references to global ambition describe an international outlook and a desire to build the club’s profile and relationships—not a specific overseas expansion plan.
What are Shilen Patel’s plans for West Brom?
Patel and his father Kiran Patel’s company, Bilkul Football WBA, completed the acquisition of an 87.8% shareholding in West Bromwich Albion on 28 February 2024, when Shilen Patel became chairman, according to BBC Sport. In the club’s first interview with him that day, Patel set out a long-term sporting objective: “I think the long-term goal has to be to get back home to the Premier League.”
He framed the Championship top six as the interim target while the club pursues that return: “I think every season until that goal is accomplished, our mindset is that we have to be a club that is aiming to be in the top six, with a chance to play our way up.” The club published the interview on 28 February 2024.
Why Patel pairs promotion ambition with caution
Promotion is a goal, not a guaranteed timetable
Patel has said West Brom must plan for the possibility that promotion will take time. In a BBC Sport interview on 13 March 2024, he said: “The biggest mistake you can make, with any Championship club, is assuming that next season you’re going to be in the Premier League.” He described aiming consistently for the Championship’s top quartile as a way to give the club an annual opportunity to move up, rather than treating promotion as inevitable.

Financial discipline shapes the sporting plan
In his initial club interview, Patel said a club without parachute payments cannot simply buy its way back to the Premier League. He said West Brom would need to earn promotion while operating with financial discipline and within current and anticipated rules. The challenge is not just assembling a competitive team: it is pursuing promotion while keeping the club on a sustainable footing.
A BBC Sport report published on 15 January 2026 described that constraint in the context of the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules. It reported a £33.9 million loss for West Brom for 2023–24 and said Patel expected another deficit in 2024–25. Those are figures and expectations reported at that time, not a statement of the club’s current accounts. The same report recorded the club’s position after 26 matches in that season: seven points above the relegation zone and ten points below the play-off places. That dated snapshot should not be read as the club’s current league position.

What Patel means by West Brom’s global aims
Patel has spoken about football’s worldwide reach and his interest in the sport as a business. In the BBC Sport interview published on 13 March 2024, he said: “Global football – and European football in particular – is interesting from a business standpoint.” The takeover announcement also described an ambition to build high-quality stakeholders “at home and globally” and highlighted The Albion Foundation’s work at home and abroad.
Together, those statements support describing an international outlook and a desire to build Albion’s global profile and relationships. They do not establish a named overseas market, a measurable global-growth target, an international academy network or a specific commercial expansion programme. The distinction matters: global interest is part of Patel’s stated perspective, but it is not evidence that a particular expansion project has been announced.

How the wider development agenda fits the Premier League goal
At the one-year mark in February 2025, Patel described priorities beyond the first team. In the club’s anniversary interview, he pointed to a younger squad with more future potential, stronger routes from the academy to the senior side, support for the women’s team and closer collaboration between the club and The Albion Foundation. He presented these as parts of the club’s development agenda, not as proof that every planned change had been completed.
Patel also discussed the competitiveness of the Championship and the challenge posed by clubs receiving parachute payments. His comments linked the promotion objective to a broader need to balance West Brom’s ambitions with the financial realities of the division and the interests of the wider football pyramid. The long-term Premier League aim therefore sits alongside a more measured approach: build the club, compete consistently and create opportunities to go up without treating promotion as certain.
