West Brom’s reported clause made Matheus Pereira’s move permanent once he reached 30 league starts, and he hit that mark in June 2020. BBC Sport put the total package at £9 million, including a loan fee already paid. Pereira’s strong season made the signing look like a sporting bargain, but the reported figures do not establish that West Brom made a financial profit.
How Pereira’s loan clause worked
Pereira joined West Brom from Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan in August 2019. BBC Sport reported two routes to a required permanent transfer:
| Reported trigger | What had to happen |
|---|---|
| 20 Championship starts | West Brom had to earn promotion. |
| 30 league starts | Reaching the appearance threshold triggered the permanent move. |
In June 2020, Pereira made his 30th Championship start in a 0–0 draw with Birmingham City. BBC Sport reported that this activated the requirement, so the move was not simply a discretionary option West Brom chose to exercise at the end of the season. BBC Sport’s June 2020 report described both routes.
What the transfer reportedly cost
BBC Sport reported a £9 million total package: an initial £750,000 loan fee, followed by a further £8.25 million due to Sporting. West Brom did not disclose the fee in its announcement, so the breakdown is a media-reported figure rather than a club-confirmed price. BBC Sport reported the amount; West Brom’s announcement called the fee undisclosed.

When West Brom confirmed the permanent signing
West Brom announced on 17 August 2020 that Pereira had signed permanently on a four-year contract. The club said the parties had agreed to complete the contract in the close season. Sporting CP’s transfer listing also records West Brom as his destination. West Brom’s announcement and the Premier League’s report confirm the signing details.
Why the signing looked like a sporting success
The Premier League reported that Pereira finished his 2019/20 loan campaign with eight goals and 16 assists in 42 appearances. That final-season tally differs from BBC Sport’s June snapshot of six goals and 12 assists, which was published before the campaign had finished.

Those contributions help explain why the deal could be described as striking gold from a footballing perspective: West Brom secured a productive player through a loan arrangement with a defined route to a permanent transfer. They do not, by themselves, show that the club earned a financial return.

The available figures establish the reported purchase terms and Pereira’s on-field contribution, but they do not establish a net profit, return on investment or the proceeds from any later sale. “Struck gold” is therefore best understood as an assessment of the acquisition’s sporting value, not a proven accounting result.
