Wells Fargo’s nationwide systems outage occurred on February 7, 2019; it is not evidence that the bank is down now. The bank attributed the incident to a power shutdown at one facility after smoke was detected following routine maintenance. Restoration continued into February 8, with some digital features and account displays still delayed.
What happened to Wells Fargo on February 7, 2019?
Wells Fargo said a power shutdown at one of its facilities was initiated after smoke was detected following routine maintenance. The bank said it was working to restore service. That is Wells Fargo’s explanation; the incident sources do not provide an independent technical investigation. Wells Fargo’s February 7 statement described the issue.
Customers reported problems with services including credit cards, ATMs, money transfers and online banking, according to contemporaneous BleepingComputer coverage. Those reports describe customer experiences; they do not establish a complete inventory of affected services or how many people were affected.
Was the outage caused by a cyberattack?
Wells Fargo said on February 8 that the issue was contained to one facility and was “not due to any cybersecurity event,” as quoted in the contemporaneous report. This is the bank’s statement, not an independently documented forensic conclusion in the sources available for this incident.

Which services came back, and what remained delayed?
Restoration was staged. In an early February 8 update, Wells Fargo said ATMs and branches were operational, customers could use its credit and debit cards for purchases, and contact-center systems had been restored, though phone-bank delays were possible. Mobile and online banking were operating, but some features—including consumer credit-card and mortgage balances—were still unavailable. The bank said it would reverse fees incurred as a result of the system issues. See Wells Fargo’s February 8 service-restoration updates.
In a later update that day, the bank said some transactions, balances and payroll deposits had temporarily not appeared online or at ATMs during recovery, but had processed normally and were then visible. Wells Fargo also warned that digital banking could continue to experience intermittent delays and that some features remained unavailable. This account of restoration does not guarantee the status of any particular customer’s account.
What should customers do if a deposit, transaction, balance or fee is missing?
- Check the account again through an available channel; temporary display problems during restoration did not necessarily mean a transaction or payroll deposit had failed.
- If an item is still missing or a fee remains, confirm it directly with Wells Fargo rather than assuming it was resolved for every account.
- For general service unavailability, Wells Fargo’s help page lists ATMs, banking locations and customer service as access options. It gives 1-800-956-4442 for online banking and bill-pay questions and 1-800-869-3557 for general personal banking questions, and says phone bankers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Check the live page for current contact information and availability.
Wells Fargo said fees incurred because of the 2019 systems issue would be reversed. If you believe an outage-related fee was not reversed, contact the bank and ask it to review the specific charge.

What if only your online-banking sign-on still fails?
A persistent individual login problem after a broader interruption is different from evidence of a bank-wide outage. Wells Fargo’s online-banking help page covers desktop and mobile access, browser requirements and password recovery. Use its current guidance for sign-on troubleshooting; these steps do not diagnose a system-wide service interruption.
What the incident record does—and does not—establish
The February 2019 incident sources do not give a verified count of affected customers, failed transactions, affected ATMs or total outage duration. They document the bank’s stated cause and restoration updates, not the scale of the event in quantified terms. Because this was a dated incident, it cannot establish whether Wells Fargo is experiencing an outage now.
