Its parent, Take-Two Interactive Software, is headquartered in New York. But Rockstar has a major British connection: Rockstar North is based in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the UK company Rockstar Games UK Limited has a registered-name history that includes DMA Design Limited and Rockstar North Limited.
Which company does “Rockstar” mean?
“Rockstar” can refer to the overall publisher and brand, a particular studio, or a UK legal entity. Those are related parts of the business, but they are not interchangeable.
- Rockstar Games: The publisher and group brand. Its legal page identifies Rockstar Games, Inc. at a New York address and names Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. as its parent. Rockstar’s legal information and Take-Two’s corporate history describe the company’s American context; Take-Two says Rockstar Games was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in New York.
- Rockstar North: A studio in Edinburgh, Scotland, which says it has been part of the Rockstar Games family since 1999. Rockstar North’s official site identifies its location and describes games it has developed.
- Rockstar Games UK Limited: An active UK private limited company. The Companies House register records its incorporation on 4 February 1997 and previous names including DMA Design Limited, Rockstar Studios Limited, and Rockstar North Limited.
What makes Rockstar British—and what does not?
Rockstar has a British studio presence and a UK company with a history linked to DMA Design. Those facts do not make the overall Rockstar Games publisher British: the publisher’s legal entity is identified at a New York address, and its parent is Take-Two Interactive Software.
Take-Two’s company directory lists Rockstar entities in both the United States and the United Kingdom, including Rockstar Games, Inc. in New York and Rockstar Games UK Limited in Edinburgh. Its FY2026 filing identifies New York as its principal executive office and lists property in London and Edinburgh in the UK. A company can have offices, studios, or subsidiaries in more than one country while its publisher and parent are headquartered elsewhere.

How DMA Design fits into the answer
DMA Design is part of the British connection because it appears in the registered-name history of Rockstar Games UK Limited. The Companies House record supports that name history and the company’s incorporation date; Rockstar North says it has belonged to the Rockstar Games family since 1999. These records establish a Scottish studio and UK legal-company presence, but they do not provide a complete account of DMA Design’s ownership transitions or the legal structure of every Rockstar entity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Rockstar Games the same as Rockstar North?
No. Rockstar Games is the publisher and brand; Rockstar North is a studio in Edinburgh within the Rockstar Games family. Rockstar North’s location and history are a meaningful part of Rockstar’s British identity, but they should not be used as evidence that the publisher itself is British.

- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
The clearest wording is: Rockstar Games is an American publisher owned by New York-based Take-Two, while Rockstar North is based in Edinburgh and has roots in the Scottish company DMA Design.
