China Southern Airlines put ten Boeing 787-8 aircraft and two spare engines into a sale process for a qualified purchaser—not a consumer listing. A March 2026 report says aircraft lessor Avolon, through parent Bohai Leasing, agreed to buy the package, though the final price and completed closing have not been independently confirmed here.
What China Southern put up for sale
China Southern Airlines Company Limited’s November 19, 2024 request for proposals covered ten self-owned Boeing 787-8 aircraft and two spare GEnx-1B70/P2 engines. The airline asked qualified potential purchasers to submit proposals for the aircraft and engines, individually and as a package. The notice described a possible sale, not an offer to the general public. China Southern’s November 19, 2024 RFP
The engines fit the aircraft story: GE Aerospace says China Southern selected GEnx-1B engines for its 787 fleet and reports the airline’s first GEnx-powered 787 delivery. GE Aerospace

Can an individual buy one?
The RFP’s buyer qualification and package language point to a specialized aviation-asset transaction, not an online retail sale. The notice does not establish that individuals could bid, that aircraft were offered separately, or that the transaction included consumer-style purchase terms. A buyer would need to qualify for the process; the available notice does not spell out the qualification criteria or detailed deal terms. China Southern’s RFP

Buying an airliner is also not equivalent to buying a vehicle or booking a flight. Aircraft condition and maintenance records, engine status, financing, registration, and applicable aviation regulations are practical matters a prospective buyer would need to investigate. The RFP confirms the assets and qualified-purchaser framing, but the sources cited here do not establish the specific inspection, financing, or import requirements for this transaction.
