One acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet. An acre measures area, so it can have many different shapes; it does not have to be a square or rectangle.
What does an acre look like?
Area is the amount of two-dimensional space a parcel covers. The acre defines that amount, not the parcel’s outline. A lot with irregular boundaries can still contain exactly one acre.
If the acre were a perfect square, each side would be about 208.710 feet. That side length is approximate; the area of 43,560 square feet is exact. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) notes that an acre is not necessarily square or rectangular in its Handbook 133.
How many square metres are in an acre?
Using the international foot, one acre equals 4,046.8564224 square metres, according to NIST’s revised conversion factors updated in 2026. The square-foot conversion remains the direct answer: 43,560 square feet per acre.

What about the survey foot?
The survey foot is a legacy definition of the foot, and using it produces a slightly different metric equivalent: approximately 4,046.872609874 square metres per acre. NIST advises avoiding U.S. survey-foot definitions after December 31, 2022, except for historic and legacy applications. For ordinary contemporary conversions, use the international-foot basis.
