Six of the nine Western Australian places named in AIA Australia’s 2025 Vitality Zones announcement are Cambridge, Claremont, Cottesloe, Gosnells, Mosman Park and Nedlands. The full list also includes Canning, Murray and Perth. The study assessed local government areas (LGAs), not individual suburbs, and it did not rank the nine WA councils against one another.
The nine Western Australian areas on AIA’s list
AIA Australia’s announcement of 25 February 2025 names these nine WA LGAs as Vitality Zones:
- Cambridge
- Canning
- Claremont
- Cottesloe
- Gosnells
- Murray
- Mosman Park
- Nedlands
- Perth
The six places in the headline are only part of the WA set. “Suburbs” appeared in The West Australian’s headline, but the study’s unit of analysis was local government areas. AIA’s announcement names 45 zones nationwide; the WA councils were selected from comparisons within their respective states, not ranked against each other.
What AIA says the zones have in common
AIA describes the 45 zones as areas with better health and wellbeing outcomes than the national population, drawing on health data and a survey. Its published figures describe zone residents as a group, not every person living in a named council area.

- The median age of death in the zones was 83.4 years, compared with 75.2 years nationally, according to Social Health Atlases data from PHIDU at Torrens University Australia, as attributed by AIA in 2025.
- Thirty-eight per cent of zone residents reported doing moderate-intensity exercise three to four days a week, compared with 32% nationally.
- Eighty-three per cent said they were confident preparing nutritious meals at home, compared with 81% nationally.
AIA also estimated that preventable hospitalisations avoided across all 45 zones were associated with $371.4 million in annual public hospital savings. This is AIA’s estimate, calculated using differences in preventable hospitalisation rates and average cost per National Weighted Activity Unit; it is not a reported total of audited savings.
How the Vitality Zones were identified
AIA says it commissioned Bastion Insights to conduct the research, with the methodology reviewed by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. The researchers reviewed health determinants and public Australia’s Health Tracker data consistent with AIA’s 5590+ framework, then used statistical testing to identify LGAs that scored significantly above others within their states.

The measures described in AIA’s announcement include overweight and obesity, blood pressure, alcohol use, smoking, physical activity, diabetes, mental and behavioural problems, and mortality from chronic and cardiovascular diseases. The survey included 1,015 nationally representative Australians and an additional 1,029 respondents from identified zones.

The announcement identifies areas with stronger measured outcomes; it does not establish that living in a particular LGA causes better health. AIA notes that socioeconomic advantage, access to health services and education also influence outcomes. Thirty-seven of the 45 zones had a SEIFA score above 1,000, a socioeconomic measure reported by AIA.

AIA also says the analysis was limited to public, systematically collected data. Relevant measures may have been left out when consistent nationwide data were unavailable. The results therefore do not describe every health factor, nor do they predict an individual resident’s health.
For someone comparing places to live, the announcement is not a council-by-council guide: it provides no ranking among the nine WA LGAs and no personalized health assessment. It supports a broad comparison with national outcomes, not a conclusion about which area is best for a particular person.
