On a job application, employer usually means the person or organization you worked for in the job entry you are describing. It is not your job title. If the form asks for your current employer, enter the organization you work for now; for your most recent employer, enter the latest organization in your work history.
What to enter in the employer field
For a regular employee, enter the organization’s name for that work-history entry. Add its address if the application requests one. U.S. Department of Labor federal hiring guidance and USAJOBS list employer name separately from job title, dates, and duties.
Keep employer, title, and duties separate
- Employer: the organization or person associated with the work.
- Job title: your role, such as cashier or project manager.
- Duties and accomplishments: what you did in the role.
These are separate details on federal hiring applications, so do not put your title in the employer field. U.S. Department of Labor federal hiring guidance and USAJOBS experience instructions describe the fields.
Which employer to list: current or most recent?
Follow the wording and order requested by the form. “Current employer” means the organization you work for now. “Most recent employer” means the latest organization where you worked, even if you have since left. If the application asks for a work-history sequence, enter positions in the requested order; federal guidance recommends starting with the current position and then listing other positions chronologically. Department of Labor guidance and the UK National Careers Service CV guidance both separate employer, title, dates, and work performed.

What if you were self-employed?
U.S. Department of Labor federal hiring guidance says to write “self-employed” when that applies. If the form has a separate field for a business name, follow that field’s instructions; do not assume the business name should replace “self-employed” in every form.
What if you worked through an agency or for a client?
If you worked at a client’s site through a staffing agency, subcontractor, or other intermediary, the form may not make clear which organization it wants. Read its instructions or ask the hiring contact. Do not decide solely from where you worked or who issued your paycheck.

For an ordinary work-history field, the practical question is which organization the application wants associated with that job. That is not necessarily the same as a legal determination of who your employer was. Social Security regulation 20 CFR § 404.1009 says, “A person is an employer if he or she employs at least one employee,” and notes that the wage-paying party is not always the employer when identity is in question. Separately, Department of Labor guidance says FLSA employee status depends on the economic realities of the full working relationship. These legal tests address particular legal contexts; they do not automatically dictate how to complete every application field. See 20 CFR § 404.1009 and Department of Labor Fact Sheet 13 (revised March 2024; the page flags a May 1, 2025 enforcement bulletin).

An employer field asks who was associated with a work-history entry. If the application separately asks whether it may contact a current or former employer, answer that separate question according to its instructions. Listing an employer does not by itself grant contact permission or mean that contact is certain. The FTC and EEOC background-check guidance discusses work-history information and legal requirements for employment decisions based on background information.
