Volkswagen and Rivian formed an equally owned joint venture to develop vehicle software and electrical architecture for future cars from both companies. Volkswagen initially announced a $5 billion investment plan in June 2024; when the venture began operating in November, it put the potential total at up to $5.8 billion. That is a funding ceiling, not money already paid or guaranteed: some funding has been invested, while further amounts depend on milestones and other conditions.
What is the Volkswagen–Rivian partnership?
The companies announced the plan in June 2024 and finalized the joint venture in November. Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies began operating on November 13, 2024, as an independent company owned equally by the two partners. It is a technology collaboration, not a merger: Volkswagen and Rivian remain separate automakers.
The venture is intended to combine Rivian’s electrical architecture and software with Volkswagen Group’s vehicle-platform capabilities and scale. Its remit includes electronic architecture, software, and related vehicle control systems for future vehicles. Volkswagen said the partnership was “the next logical step in strengthening our global competitive and technological position.” Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the collaboration would help integrate Rivian technology into vehicles outside the company and accelerate EV adoption. Those statements describe the companies’ rationale, not independently verified outcomes.
What does the up-to-$5.8 billion figure mean?
The June 2024 announcement described a $5 billion plan. Volkswagen’s November 2024 launch announcement raised the potential total to up to $5.8 billion. The later figure includes funding already invested as well as financing that remains conditional.

| Funding component | Amount and status |
|---|---|
| Convertible note to Rivian | $1 billion initial note, described in Volkswagen’s November 2024 launch announcement. |
| JV closing | About $1.3 billion at closing for background intellectual-property licenses and Volkswagen’s 50% share, according to the launch announcement. |
| Further investments | Up to another $3.5 billion in future equity, convertible-note, and debt financing, tied to milestones in the launch announcement. |
| June 2025 investment | Volkswagen’s 2025 annual report reported a further $1 billion equity investment in June 2025. |
| Additional milestone-based funding | Volkswagen’s 2025 annual report described up to $2.5 billion in further equity and debt when technical milestones are reached in 2026 and 2027. |
| Term loan facility | Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K described a $1 billion facility expected to be available in October 2026, subject to customary funding conditions. |
These disclosures describe different parts and stages of the financing arrangement; they should not be added together as though every amount were separate cash already transferred. Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K also identifies conditions including milestones and regulatory clearances. The headline maximum is therefore not a promise that Volkswagen has paid, or will unconditionally pay, $5.8 billion.
Why are the companies working together?
The joint venture is developing a software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture using Rivian’s existing architecture and software as its base. In a November 2025 update, Volkswagen described a zonal electronic architecture: modular central computers control vehicle functions, rather than relying on a larger number of separate control units.

The companies say the planned system can support features such as automated driving, infotainment, and over-the-air updates. They also say sharing the technology could speed development, reduce costs, and extend it across vehicle segments and price points. These are intended capabilities and company-stated aims; they do not establish that every feature is available in production vehicles or that savings have been achieved.
Which vehicles are expected to use the technology, and when?
The rollout remains a set of company plans and targets, not a guarantee of production timing or feature availability.

- Rivian R2: At the November 2024 JV launch, the companies said the work would enable an R2 launch in the first half of 2026.
- Volkswagen Group models: The November 2024 announcement said the first models could follow as early as 2027. In November 2025, Volkswagen identified the ID.EVERY1 as the first Group series model planned to use a version of the architecture, with series launch scheduled for 2027.
- Reference vehicles: Volkswagen said in November 2025 that reference vehicles from Volkswagen, Scout, and Audi were being prepared for winter testing in Q1 2026.
- Future electric vehicles: Volkswagen said it plans to deploy the architecture in electric vehicles based on its upcoming SSP platform. Rivian identified R2, R3, and R3X as future products intended to use JV technologies.
As of Volkswagen’s November 2025 update, the venture had more than 1,500 employees and development locations in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Serbia, and Berlin. Scaringe described the effort as having “gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months” and “raising the bar in automotive technology.”

For drivers, the partnership could put Rivian-developed architecture and software into some future Volkswagen Group vehicles, while helping Rivian apply the technology across its own planned lineup. But a joint development effort is not the same as a feature being installed, released, or available on a particular model; the announced schedules are targets.

For investors, the $5.8 billion figure signals the possible scale of Volkswagen’s commitment, but it is not a straightforward measure of cash already spent. The companies’ disclosures distinguish completed investments from future funding tied to technical milestones, regulatory clearances, and other conditions. The venture’s strategic aim is to share technology across separate vehicle programs, while each automaker continues to build and sell its own vehicles.
