Virgin Australia’s fourth Australian city in its Doha network was Melbourne. The airline planned daily Melbourne–Doha flights from December 2025 using Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and crew under a wet-lease arrangement. Sydney, Brisbane and Perth were the other Australian gateways.
What is Virgin Australia’s fourth Doha route?
It is Melbourne–Doha. Virgin Australia’s original plan called for daily Doha services from Sydney, Brisbane and Perth beginning in June 2025, followed by daily Melbourne service from December 2025, according to the International Air Services Commission’s 2025 determination. Virgin Australia announced the Melbourne flights in December 2025, noting that the service could also add cargo capacity between Melbourne and Doha (Virgin Australia announcement).
“Fourth route” refers to the fourth Australian city pair in the Doha network—not a fourth aircraft. The four city pairs are Sydney–Doha, Brisbane–Doha, Perth–Doha and Melbourne–Doha.
Who operates the Melbourne flight?
Qatar Airways supplies the aircraft and crew; Virgin Australia markets the flights under Virgin Australia flight numbers. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission described the arrangement as: “Virgin Australia will use Qatar Airways’ aircraft and crew to operate the new services under a ‘wet lease’ arrangement” (ACCC announcement). In other words, Virgin Australia sells the service while relying on Qatar Airways’ operating resources for these flights.

The IASC allocated Virgin Australia 28 frequencies per week in each direction on the Qatar route, subject to conditions (IASC Qatar determination). The four initially planned daily city-pair services account for those 28 weekly departures from Australia.
Which aircraft and cabin are used?
The Melbourne–Doha service uses Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. IASC materials give a proposed capacity range of 354–412 seats (IASC determination materials). Qatar Airways’ partnership portal describes a two-class configuration consistent with its existing Australian 777-300ER service (Qatar Airways VA Partnership portal).

The Australian Government’s Northern Summer 2026 timetable summary lists seven Boeing 777-300ER services each week on each of the four city pairs—daily service, or 28 weekly services in total for that published season (Northern Summer 2026 timetable summary). That is a seasonal timetable, not a promise that the same frequency applies throughout the year.

A July 2026 report described planned Northern Winter 2026/27 changes, including a second daily Sydney–Doha flight and a Perth–Doha resumption (AeroRoutes schedule report). Those are reported plans; check Virgin Australia’s or Qatar Airways’ live schedules for the travel date before relying on a particular flight or frequency.
