A reliable current net-worth figure for Vijay Mallya is not established. Reported lender claims, recovered sums, restored assets and UK judgment debt measure different things.

A reliable current net-worth figure for Vijay Mallya is not established by the available reporting. Headlines cite large sums recovered by lenders, assets handed to them, and debt still claimed. Those figures refer to different things; none is a verified accounting of Mallya’s assets minus his liabilities.

Why there is no dependable net-worth figure

Net worth requires a current, complete picture of assets a person owns and their value, alongside liabilities, legal claims, and any relevant encumbrances. The recent figures reported in Mallya’s case concern lender recovery, property restoration, or debt proceedings. They do not provide that full balance sheet.

For that reason, an online estimate should not be treated as verified unless it explains its asset data, valuation date, liabilities, and method. Nor can a credible figure be produced by subtracting one reported recovery amount from a separate debt claim.

What the reported figures actually measure

Reported amount What it refers to Qualification
₹8,751.86 crore Amount SBI-led lenders said remained recoverable As of August 31, 2026, excluding legal and other expenses; reported by The Economic Times on October 3, 2026 from a lender affidavit. This is the lenders’ reported position, not a valuation of Mallya’s wealth.
₹10,270 crore temporarily recovered, plus ₹544.58 crore recovered before the DRT suit Recovery figures stated by the SBI-led lenders Reported in the same October 3, 2026 account. The report says the temporary recovery was supported by a bond undertaking from the consortium. These figures are not a net-worth calculation.
₹14,131.6 crore Value of movable and immovable properties the ED said had been handed to the SBI-led consortium Valued as of August 2021, according to Bar & Bench on September 11, 2026. It is not a current valuation of assets Mallya still controls.
More than £1 billion Judgment debt discussed in Mallya’s UK bankruptcy appeal Reuters reported on April 9, 2025 that his appeal was rejected. This is a debt and bankruptcy figure, not an estimate of present net worth.

How to understand the recovery and court proceedings

Lender claims are not the same as personal wealth

The ₹8,751.86 crore figure is the amount lenders said remained recoverable as of August 31, 2026, excluding legal and other expenses. The recovery amounts reported alongside it describe sums lenders said had been recovered or temporarily recovered. They should not be added to or subtracted from other figures to infer Mallya’s net worth.

Restored property is not necessarily cash or property still controlled by Mallya

The ED’s ₹14,131.6 crore figure refers to properties handed to the lender consortium and valued as of August 2021. It does not establish that Mallya received that amount, or that he continues to own or control those assets.

In the litigation described by Bar & Bench, the ED argued that restoring property to lenders does not itself end pending proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency’s position in ongoing litigation is not a final finding on the merits. The Economic Times quoted the ED’s reply: “The subsequent restoration/ recovery of assets, therefore, cannot be construed as extinguishing or rendering infructuous the pending proceedings under the PMLA.”

The UK bankruptcy appeal is a separate legal track

Reuters reported that Mallya lost his appeal against a UK bankruptcy order on April 9, 2025. The court rejected his argument that assets recovered by banks had effectively settled the judgment debt, leaving the bankruptcy order in place. That procedural outcome does not establish the current value of all his assets and liabilities.

What can responsibly be said

The reported figures show a substantial lender claim alongside major reported recoveries and property restorations. They do not establish a reliable current net-worth number. A defensible estimate would need current ownership and valuation data, together with a consistent accounting of liabilities, encumbrances, and recoveries; the cited reports do not provide that complete picture.

One earlier ED figure also needs careful attribution: in a June 23, 2021 press release, the agency said ₹8,441.5 crore in attached assets had been transferred to public-sector banks in cases involving Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Mehul Choksi collectively. That combined amount should not be presented as Mallya’s assets alone: ED press release.

The Economic Times reported that the matter was scheduled to be heard by the Bombay High Court on October 13, 2026. That date was still in the future in its October 3 report, so no outcome of that scheduled hearing is established here.
