Valeo acquired Connaught Electronics Ltd. (CEL), an automotive electronics developer based in Tuam, Ireland, in 2007. The deal expanded Valeo’s camera-based vision capabilities for low-speed driving maneuvers such as parking and close-quarters vehicle movement.

What did Connaught Electronics make?

CEL developed automotive electronics in two main areas: camera applications for driver-assistance functions and radio-frequency systems used for remote vehicle access and security. Valeo’s reported rationale for the acquisition focused on extending its camera-based vision solutions for low-speed maneuvering; the report did not identify a specific consumer camera product.

How large was CEL when Valeo acquired it?

At the time of the 2007 report, CEL had nearly 300 employees across its sites in Tuam, Ireland, and Humpolec, Czech Republic. Embedded.com reported annual sales of €37 million in 2007. The report also said Valeo expected the new division to double sales by 2010; that was a forecast at the time, and the cited sources do not establish whether it was achieved. What role does Tuam have at Valeo now?

Valeo says CEL was established in 1982 and acquired by the group in 2007. The company now describes its Tuam site as a center of excellence and a worldwide reference center for vision systems, linking the Irish operation to Valeo’s ongoing vision-systems work. Valeo’s Ireland overview

What the available deal information does not establish

The cited 2007 report does not establish CEL’s purchase price, the exact signing or closing date, the legal structure of the transaction, or a detailed integration timeline. A separate Valeo transaction announced in 2022 involved buying Siemens’ 50% stake in Valeo Siemens eAutomotive for €277 million in cash on a debt-free basis; that figure is not CEL’s purchase price.
