Unveiling the True Cost: How Much Does It Cost to Charge a Tesla in 2025?

A Tesla charge costs kWh billed times your rate. Using the 2025 U.S. residential average of 17.30 cents per kWh, a 60 kWh session is about $10.38, and here is how to calculate your own.

At the 2025 U.S. average residential electricity price of 17.30 cents per kWh, every kilowatt-hour a Tesla takes from a home outlet costs about 17 cents. A 60 kWh charging session therefore comes to roughly $10.38 at that average rate. Your actual bill depends on your own utility rate, the time you charge, and how much energy the car really draws from the wall, so the national figure is a starting point rather than a quote.

The formula that gives you your real number

Every Tesla charging cost, whether at home or at a Supercharger, comes from the same two inputs:

  • Energy billed (kWh): the kilowatt-hours added to the battery during the session, as recorded on your bill or in the Tesla app.
  • Rate per kWh: the price that applies at the time and place you charged.

The calculation is simply kWh billed × rate per kWh = session cost. Charging losses are already reflected in the kWh your meter or Tesla account records, so use that billed figure rather than the energy you think the battery stored.

Which electricity rate applies to you

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) publishes the most widely cited national benchmarks. Its 2026 release reports 2025 annual averages, with 2025 values marked preliminary. The figures below are not interchangeable, so match the one to your situation.

Your own residential rate is what matters for home charging. It may be higher or lower than the 17.30 cents benchmark, and it may differ by time of day.

Estimating home charging cost

Home is where most Tesla owners do the majority of their charging, and Tesla’s own support guidance says that charging at home is often the cheapest option. Tesla also notes that your savings may increase on a time-of-use rate plan designed for EV charging, if one is available where you live. That advice is general, not a guarantee for every utility territory.

To calculate a home session with your own numbers:

  1. Find your residential rate on your electricity bill, or on your utility’s website. Note whether it is a flat rate or a time-of-use schedule with separate on-peak, off-peak, and similar periods.
  2. If you have a time-of-use plan, identify the rate for the hours you actually charge. Overnight charging often falls in a lower-priced window, but confirm the exact start and end times for your plan.
  3. Find the kWh added for your session in the Tesla app or your charging history.
  4. Multiply the kWh by the rate for those hours.

In the Tesla app, the home rate plan you enter drives the home cost figures shown in Tesla Charge Stats. If that plan does not match your bill, the home cost estimates will not match your bill either. Update the plan whenever your utility changes its rate.

Tesla Wall Connector - Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger - Level 2 - up to 48A with 24' Cable
  • COMPATIBILITY: Wall Connector is compatible with all Tesla models: Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y.
  • CHARGING SPEED: Up to 44 miles of range per hour of charge, with up to 11.5 kW / 48 amp output, depending on Tesla model and breaker size.
  • CONVENIENCE: Indoor or outdoor installation with variable amperage that allows max output to be customized to an existing power supply and supports any output up to 48A. Possible max output configurations include: 48A, 40A, 32A, 24A, 16A, 12A.
  • CONNECTIVITY: Connecting the Wall Connector to a local Wi-Fi network enables over-the-air firmware updates for continual product improvements and remote access control.
  • POWER-SHARE: Power-share is ideal for locations that need to charge more than one Tesla at the same time. This functionality allows up to six Wall Connectors to be linked for efficient power management.

Estimating Supercharger cost

Supercharger sessions are billed differently from home charging. Tesla pulls Supercharger costs from your Tesla Account billing data, so the actual amount you paid for each session is the figure to use. Do not substitute the national residential average, because a Supercharger price is set by the site and billing structure, not by your home utility. The Tesla app and your Tesla Account show the session cost once billing is complete.

Tesla’s “Total Spent on Charging” total combines home, Supercharger, and other location costs. Use it to see your overall charging spend, and split the total by location if you want to compare home and public charging.

Turning cost into cost per mile

Cost per mile equals the energy you use per mile multiplied by the rate you pay per kWh. The energy per mile depends on your model, trim, tires, weather, and driving style, so it cannot be taken from a generic table. Tesla describes its added-miles figures as estimates based on charged energy and the model and trim’s efficiency under ideal regional driving conditions. Real-world results can differ because of road conditions and heavier use, and the odometer is the better measure of miles actually driven.

A practical approach is to divide the kWh you charged by the miles you drove over a month. That gives you your own kWh per mile, which you can multiply by your rate to get a cost per mile that reflects your habits.

Charging equipment: a one-time cost, separate from electricity

Equipment is an upfront expense, and it does not change the per-kWh cost of the electricity itself. Tesla’s Home Charging page listed the following hardware prices when accessed. Displayed prices change, so confirm them on Tesla’s site before you buy.

Tesla home hardware Price displayed on Tesla’s Home Charging page Practical note
Mobile Connector $300 Plugs into a suitable existing outlet, so Tesla does not require a Wall Connector for home charging
Wall Connector $585 A dedicated wall-mounted unit; installation adds a separate cost
Universal Wall Connector $660 A dedicated wall-mounted unit; installation adds a separate cost

Installation cost depends on your electrical system and the type of installation. Tesla directs owners to get a quote from an installer rather than publishing a flat figure. Installing new electrical equipment can add a cost beyond the hardware itself.

  • ✅【Wireless Port Door Control – No Keys Needed】Our portable charger features a built-in wireless charging port door control. Just press the button on the connector to open your Tesla charging port automatically — no more fumbling with keys or buttons. Convenience at your fingertips.

Charging speed also changes how long a session takes, though not what it costs per kWh. According to Tesla’s support page, a standard 120 V household outlet with the Mobile Connector can add about 2 to 3 miles of range per hour. A suitable existing 240 V outlet can add up to about 30 miles per hour for listed configurations.

A worked example

Suppose a session adds 60 kWh to the battery, and your residential rate is the 2025 U.S. average of 17.30 cents per kWh. These are illustrative assumptions, not measured values for any particular Tesla.

  • 60 kWh × $0.1730 = $10.38 for the session.
  • If the same 60 kWh were billed at an off-peak rate of 10 cents per kWh (an assumed example, not a published tariff), the session would cost $6.00.
  • If the same 60 kWh were billed at a peak rate of 30 cents per kWh (also an assumed example), the session would cost $18.00.

The spread between those last two lines shows why your own tariff schedule matters more than any national average.

What to check before you trust a number

  • Your utility’s current residential rate and whether it is flat or time-of-use.
  • The hours that count as off-peak or on-peak on your plan, and whether the plan is available to EV owners.
  • The kWh shown for each session, not the battery percentage change alone.
  • Whether the home rate plan in the Tesla app matches the plan on your bill.
  • The exact Supercharger amounts in your Tesla Account billing history.

With those inputs, you can calculate what a full charge, a week of driving, or a month of charging costs you, rather than relying on a national average.
