In a 2019 interview, Founders Fund partner Cyan Banister said investment decisions involved different numbers of partners depending on a deal’s stage and size: early-stage investments could involve one or a few partners, while larger checks brought broader general-partner oversight. She also said Peter Thiel was always involved above an undisclosed investment threshold. Her account describes the firm as she understood it then—not its current decision rules.
Who participated in Founders Fund investment decisions?
In Connie Loizos’s November 15, 2019 TechCrunch interview, Banister described a process that varied with both investment stage and check size. “So you’d meet with one or two or three or four partners, depending on your [investing] stage,” she told attendees.
Early-stage deals
Banister said an early-stage founder might meet with one partner or several. The interview does not set out a fixed number of partners for each stage, or a formal approval sequence.
Larger checks
For larger amounts, she described full general-partner oversight, including senior partners Brian Singerman and Keith Rabois. She did not give a dollar amount that triggered this broader review.

Peter Thiel’s involvement
Banister said there was a threshold above which Thiel was always involved and met founders. Asked what the amount was, she declined to disclose it, describing it only as “a lot.” The interview therefore establishes neither a threshold figure nor a complete decision-making policy.
What did Banister say about the firm’s meetings?
“We have very few meetings, actually,” Banister said. She described brunches every two or three weeks, with agendas submitted over Slack, and quarterly off-sites. She said the off-sites focused on the future, partners’ interests, and strategy rather than specific deals.
What was Banister’s investment approach at the time?
TechCrunch described Banister as focused on very early-stage startups. The article reported that she characterized her angel investments as $1.5 million or less and said her interests included both ambitious, futuristic companies and practical companies she believed were needed. These are descriptions of her approach in 2019, not a current investment limit or commitment.
Did Founders Fund invest beyond Silicon Valley?
Banister said the firm was beginning to look beyond Silicon Valley, including in the Midwest. She also attributed some difficulty investing only in Silicon Valley and its surroundings to San Francisco’s high costs and housing constraints. Those comments reflect her account and views in 2019; they do not establish the firm’s current geographic mandate.

What was Banister’s career background?
TechCrunch recounted that Banister worked at security startup IronPort, which Cisco acquired in 2007 in a deal the article valued at $830 million. She later invested as an angel with her husband, Scott Banister, and joined Founders Fund as a partner in 2016. The $830 million figure is TechCrunch’s reported valuation of the 2007 sale, as recounted in 2019.

The interview is a reported account of Banister’s description, not a Founders Fund policy document. It does not establish the firm’s current decision rules or partner roster, or Banister’s current role. Its practical takeaway is limited but clear: in her 2019 account, more partners participated as investment amounts grew, while the threshold for Thiel’s involvement remained undisclosed.
