There is no single reliable 2025 venture capitalist salary. Pay depends on seniority, fund size, geography, and whether “compensation” means base salary, cash pay including a bonus, or total compensation that also accounts for carried interest. Public survey summaries offer useful signals, but they do not provide a complete, comparable dollar range for top VC investors.
What “venture capitalist salary” includes
Compensation figures are only comparable when they measure the same components. A base salary is fixed cash pay. A bonus is additional cash compensation that may vary by performance or firm policy. Carried interest, or carry, is a share of investment profits allocated to fund managers; it is linked to fund outcomes and should not be treated as guaranteed annual income.
- Base salary: fixed cash compensation.
- Bonus: variable cash compensation, reported separately from base pay.
- Carry: performance-linked participation in fund profits, not a dependable annual paycheck.
For senior partners and general partners, carry and bonuses can have more influence on compensation than base-salary growth. The public summary of Holt-MM&K-Buyouts’ 2025–2026 North American report describes that pattern, but does not publish the detailed role-specific figures needed to calculate a typical VC salary. What the available 2025 salary data actually say
Europe: VC professionals ranked lowest in total compensation among surveyed strategies
Heidrick & Struggles’ 2025 Europe Private Capital Compensation Survey says venture-capital professionals had the lowest total compensation among the strategies it covered for both managing partners and partners. The public excerpt does not give the VC-specific dollar amounts, so it cannot establish a numerical VC partner or managing-partner salary.

The survey does report all-strategy averages by title. These are Europe private-capital figures, not VC-specific pay benchmarks:
| Role | Average base pay | Average bonus | Scope and respondents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managing partner | EUR 348.8 thousand | EUR 350.8 thousand | Europe private capital across strategies; n = 44 managing-partner respondents |
| Partner | EUR 378.5 thousand | EUR 392.3 thousand | Europe private capital across strategies; n = 80 partner respondents |
| Principal | EUR 188.3 thousand | EUR 170.3 thousand | Europe private capital across strategies; n = 110 principal respondents |
These component averages should not be added and labeled total compensation: carry is separate, and the public excerpt does not reproduce the survey’s total-compensation methodology or table. The sample sizes also mean these means are not promises of what an individual will earn. Heidrick & Struggles’ 2025 Europe Private Capital Compensation Survey
North America: detailed benchmarks exist, but the public summary does not disclose the figures
The 2025–2026 Holt-MM&K-Buyouts report describes salary statistics by job title and firm investment strategy or assets under management, including averages, medians, and quartiles, alongside bonus and carried-interest distributions. It covers 52 job titles and groups venture-capital firms by size. Its public summary says senior partner and GP base-salary growth is more restrained, with bonus and carry allocations playing a larger role in compensation. Because the detailed tables are not openly shown in the available summary, no specific North American VC salary range can be responsibly quoted here. VC-specific survey: cash pay below partner level reportedly softened
Venture5 says its 2025 survey gathered responses from more than 700 professionals at more than 50 firms. It spans institutional VC, corporate venture teams, incubators and accelerators, and family offices, so its findings do not represent a single type of VC employer or a census of the market. Its public highlights report that cash compensation over the prior two years declined or stayed flat for roles below partner, while partner compensation rose; patterns in cash and carry differed between emerging and established managers. Venture5 also reports a 20% decline in analyst compensation. That is a result reported by this survey, not a universal estimate of analyst pay or a forecast. The public page does not provide detailed role tables. Venture5 2025 VC Salary Survey

Why two VC salary estimates can differ sharply
A salary number may describe a different job, employer, location, or pay component than the one you have in mind. Before comparing figures, check:
- Seniority: analyst, principal, partner, and managing partner are distinct roles.
- Fund size or AUM: compensation tables may separate firms by the size of their investments or assets.
- Geography: a Europe-wide benchmark is not automatically comparable with a North American one.
- Organization type: institutional venture funds, corporate venture teams, accelerators, and family offices can have different pay structures.
- Pay components: base-only, base plus bonus, and compensation including carry are different measures.
- Statistic and sample: compare mean with mean, median with median, and quartile with quartile; note the survey year and respondent base.
For instance, a European all-strategy partner average that includes private-capital strategies beyond VC cannot serve as a VC partner benchmark. Nor should a cash-only estimate be compared directly with a total-compensation figure that includes carry.

For an individual senior investor, a headline salary is especially incomplete if it leaves out carry. Carry depends on fund performance and allocation terms, and may not translate into cash in the same year it is earned—or at all. A base-salary figure therefore cannot answer what a top investor ultimately receives, while a projected carry allocation is not equivalent to realized income.
Look for a benchmark that identifies the investor’s role, geography, firm or fund size, survey year, and whether the figure is base pay, cash compensation, or total compensation. The public summaries available for 2025 do not establish one definitive annual earnings figure for top VC investors.
