CoinDesk Indices is a provider of digital-asset benchmarks, reference rates and institutional market data. Its catalogue includes broad-market indexes, asset-specific price benchmarks and strategies. An index’s name alone does not explain what it measures: to compare benchmarks, check each one’s objective, constituents, weighting, price inputs, review schedule and current methodology.

What CoinDesk Indices provides

CoinDesk Indices offers reference points for measuring digital-asset markets and data and licensing services for institutional users. CoinDesk describes its catalogue as including more than 400 BMR-compliant indices; that is the company’s own portfolio count, not an independently audited figure. Its institutional pages also report more than $40 billion in benchmarked assets, a company-reported scale figure dated to pages reviewed October 8, 2026. These numbers indicate the provider’s stated commercial reach, not the quality or investment merits of any benchmark.

The main product categories include multi-asset indices, reference rates and strategies. CoinDesk also promotes real-time and historical market data. Access, licensing terms and the intended use of a benchmark are institutional matters; the public descriptions do not establish a consumer investment product or a recommendation to buy a particular asset.

How the index families differ

Broad and selected-asset indices

CoinDesk describes the CoinDesk 20 as a benchmark for the broader digital-asset class and a possible foundation for investment vehicles. The CoinDesk 5 tracks the five largest constituents of the CoinDesk 20 by market capitalization and rebalances quarterly, according to CoinDesk’s product description. Those rules should not be assumed to apply to other indexes: eligibility, weighting, concentration limits and review schedules are index-specific.

Single-asset reference rates

CoinDesk’s Benchmark Rates page describes spot rates calculated every five seconds from recent prices on contributing exchanges, weighted by 24-hour volume. It says the calculation includes protection against outlier prices and penalties for trading inactivity, and that the rates feed indices such as CoinDesk 20 Spot. This is a high-level description; technical details such as venue eligibility, exceptional-market handling and precise calculation rules belong in the relevant current methodology.

CoinDesk also describes the CoinDesk Solana Price Index (SLX) as a USD-denominated spot reference rate using multiple constituent exchanges. Its stated exchange weights reflect trailing 24-hour liquidity, with adjustments for price variance and inactivity. Two benchmarks that both quote the same token can therefore use different inputs and weighting rules.

What to check before comparing or relying on an index

Use the specific index’s current methodology and related governance documents rather than inferring its rules from another product with a similar name.

  • Objective and breadth: Determine whether it measures a broad market, a selected group of assets, a single-asset spot price, a settlement value or a strategy.
  • Constituents and eligibility: Check which assets and trading venues may be included, and how exclusions are handled.
  • Weighting and concentration: Identify whether weights use market capitalization, liquidity, equal weighting, caps or another stated rule.
  • Review and reconstitution: Find the scheduled review frequency and rules for additions, removals and exceptional changes.
  • Price inputs and timing: Check contributing markets, quote currency, calculation cadence and whether the index is intended for spot measurement or settlement.
  • Governance and intended use: Review the methodology version, benchmark statement, controls, licensing requirements and whether the index is meant for measurement or for use in a financial product.

CoinDesk says its index committee oversees index design, maintenance and publication, and provides methodologies, policies, benchmark statements and supplements on its governance page. The catalogue showed CoinDesk 20 and CoinDesk 80 methodologies dated July 7, 2026, and a Benchmark Rates methodology dated August 25, 2026. The same page lists February 6, 2026 notices announcing termination of certain single-digital-asset indices, the CMI index family and select indices. Check the live catalogue and relevant cessation notice before treating a particular product as active.

CoinDesk’s governance materials describe UK FCA regulation, BMR compliance, alignment with IOSCO principles, ISO certification and SOC reports. These are provider statements about its controls and status; they do not guarantee an index’s performance or make an investment linked to it safe.

Adoption and institutional use: what the claims show

CoinDesk’s institutional overview reports that XBX has been live since 2014 and serves as a foundation for the first U.S. and Canadian Bitcoin ETFs. It also says CoinDesk 20 has generated more than $15 billion in volume since its 2024 launch and underlies more than 20 global investment vehicles, and that CoinDesk 5 benchmarks the first U.S. crypto ETP. These are CoinDesk’s own adoption claims, not independent findings; product use demonstrates commercial application, not expected returns or suitability for an individual investor.

On February 5, 2026, CoinDesk announced that Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) planned to list seven regulated cryptocurrency futures contracts benchmarked to CoinDesk Indices, covering single-asset altcoins and broad-market benchmarks. That announcement establishes a stated collaboration and plan as of that date; it does not by itself confirm that the contracts subsequently launched.

CoinDesk’s February 10, 2026 report, Digital Asset ETP Landscape: Past, Present and Future, estimated $257 billion in digital-asset ETP assets under management as of 2025, said U.S. Bitcoin ETF inflows exceeded $100 billion in 11 months, and counted more than 125 pending product filings. These are dated figures from CoinDesk’s report, not independently validated current market totals. Filing counts can change quickly.

What benchmark adoption does—and does not—mean for investors

A benchmark can provide a consistent reference for tracking a market, calculating a product’s exposure or settling a contract. It does not tell you whether an investment vehicle is suitable, whether its fees are reasonable, or whether the underlying assets will rise in value. A financial product that uses an index also has its own structure, costs, risks and tracking behavior. Evaluate those separately from the index methodology.

For institutional organizations seeking data access or permission to use an index in a fund, financial product or derivative, CoinDesk offers index licensing and institutional digital-asset market data. The provider’s invitation to contact its licensing team does not establish consumer signup terms or an affiliate offer.
