Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, was shot to death outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Luigi Mangione later pleaded guilty in federal court to two stalking-related offenses resulting in Thompson’s death. Federal sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2026; the available New York state docket summary does not establish the outcome of a separate state-court order.
What is the latest status of the Brian Thompson case?
On August 14, 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced that Mangione had pleaded guilty to interstate stalking resulting in death and cyberstalking through interstate facilities resulting in death. The office said sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2026. That is a scheduled date, not confirmation that sentencing has occurred. Read the U.S. Attorney’s Office announcement.
The federal plea concerns those two federal offenses. It should not be treated as a sentence, or as an account of the disposition of every separate charge.
What is known about the New York state case?
The New York State Unified Court System docket lists a defense motion seeking dismissal of remaining state charges on August 14, 2026, followed by an order dated August 17. The docket summary available here does not give the order’s substantive effect, so it does not establish whether any charges were dismissed. View the People v. Luigi Mangione criminal docket.

At a December 9, 2024 media availability, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said, “Our CEO, Brian Thompson of United Healthcare, was the victim of a senseless act of violence.” Adams described Mangione then as believed to be a person of interest in the targeted-murder investigation. That was an early-investigation description, not an update on the later federal plea or the status of the state charges. Read the mayor’s media-availability transcript.
