In Germany, 70% of people aged 16–74 bought or ordered goods or services online in the previous three months in 2025. A Northern Ireland survey found that 80% of its online-shopping respondents shopped at least monthly. For U.S. groceries, 19.3% of people who usually shopped for groceries bought them online at least once in the previous 30 days in 2022. Each figure measures something different: recent participation, reported shopping cadence, or category-specific buying.
What does “frequency of online shopping” mean?
It can mean either how recently someone bought online or how many times they purchased during a period. A survey that asks whether someone bought online in the previous three months measures recent participation; it does not count that person’s orders. A survey asking how often someone shops online captures reported cadence, while a purchase-count distribution describes how many transactions buyers made in a defined period.

The distinction matters for personal-finance decisions. The share of people who bought online says nothing by itself about how much they spent, how many orders they placed, or whether they shop more often than in an earlier year.
What recent surveys say about online-shopping frequency
| Geography and year measured | Population and scope | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Germany, 2025 | People aged 16–74; goods and services | 70% bought or ordered online in the previous three months; 86% had ever done so. Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis), table reporting 2025 results. |
| Northern Ireland, 2025 | 936 respondents who shopped online | 80% shopped at least monthly, 41% at least fortnightly, and 21% at least weekly. Consumer Council for Northern Ireland, 2025 survey report. |
| United States, 2022 | People who usually shopped for groceries for their household | 19.3% bought groceries online at least once in the previous 30 days. USDA Economic Research Service, 2024 report. |
| European Union, 2025 | Respondents; online purchases generally | More than one in four last purchased online in the previous three months; 11% last purchased three to twelve months earlier and 6% more than a year earlier. These are recency bands, not order counts. Eurostat, 2026 edition. |
The figures are useful snapshots, not a ranking. They differ in geography, population, category, survey question and reference period.

How often do U.S. online grocery shoppers buy?
The USDA Economic Research Service’s analysis of the 2022 Eating and Health Module of the American Time Use Survey separates the share of regular grocery shoppers who bought online from the purchase frequency among those online buyers. Of the people who bought groceries online in the previous month, 30.2% purchased once, 25.1% twice and 44.7% three or more times in that month. The distribution applies only to those online grocery buyers; it is not a count for all U.S. shoppers or for online shopping overall. USDA ERS report ERR-336 and its online-grocery explainer report these findings.
Why the statistics cannot be combined into one average
- The populations differ. Destatis covers people aged 16–74; the USDA incidence figure is among people who usually grocery-shop; Northern Ireland’s frequency percentages are among respondents who already shopped online.
- The scope differs. Germany’s measure covers goods and services, the U.S. figures concern groceries, and the Northern Ireland and EU findings concern online shopping more broadly.
- The time measures differ. “At least once in the previous 30 days,” “in the previous three months,” and “at least monthly” are not identical measures.
- The numbers answer different questions. Recent-purchase incidence and recency do not tell you order counts. The grocery purchase-count breakdown does not describe other product categories.
For the same reasons, these data do not establish a global average or a trend line. Comparing years responsibly requires consistent geography, population, category, question wording and reference period.

How to read an online-shopping frequency statistic
- Check who was surveyed. Is the denominator all adults, an age band, regular category shoppers, or people who already buy online?
- Check what counts as shopping. A figure for groceries cannot automatically stand in for goods and services across the economy.
- Read the time window and wording. “Bought in the last three months” indicates recency; “three or more purchases in a month” indicates transaction count.
- Keep purchase frequency separate from spending. A higher share of recent buyers does not establish higher order volume, household expenditure or budget impact.
- Note the survey year, not just the publication year. For example, the USDA report published in 2024 analyzes U.S. grocery-shopping data collected in 2022.
