The examples explain the brand’s approach, but they do not establish current model specifications or availability.
How does Micromilspec approach watch design?
Rye told Time+Tide that a design starts with what a unit identifies with. A watch might draw on details that echo a uniform or carry meaning that the intended owners recognize, rather than relying only on overt military styling.
He also described the balancing act: “As a brand, we always prioritise function and quality.” In the same interview, Rye said customers also care about form, identity and storytelling. The examples he gave show how those priorities can meet in a particular project; they should not be taken as a description of every watch the company makes.
Hercules: a cockpit as a design reference
For the Hercules watch, Rye pointed to the cockpit of a Hercules aircraft during a night flight as inspiration. The interview does not provide specifications or establish that the model is currently available.

A color-coded bezel for a bodyguard unit
Rye described a bodyguard unit that requested a bezel divided into colors corresponding to its operational code language. In his example, “black on box” meant a designated entry point that could be aligned by rotating the bezel. This was a unit-specific design example, not evidence that all Micromilspec bezels or watches serve that purpose.
What does field testing mean in Rye’s account?
Rye described field testing chiefly as gathering practical feedback under real conditions, not as a documented independent laboratory program or a set of standardized performance results. The questions he cited were about everyday use:
- Can someone grip and operate the crown while wearing gloves?
- Is the watch’s size practical for its intended use?
- Does the bracelet snag wrist hair, and how does it wear?
- Where does visible wear first appear?
He said the Field Testing Unit watch puts its model name and serial number directly on the dial. That helps soldiers tell watches apart when several are placed side by side; Rye noted that the layout resembles a dog tag.

Why might a mechanical watch be relevant in some military settings?
Rye said that in some military contexts electronic devices—including quartz watches and smartwatches—are prohibited because of traceability concerns. He contrasted those devices with an automatic watch’s mechanical movement. This is his explanation from the interview, not a universal rule for military units or deployments and not an independently established security assessment.

Rye said Micromilspec had used forged carbon in a custom project for Special Operations Forces. He also described ceramic as appealing for its range of colors, said the company had made adjustments intended to reduce chipping risk, and mentioned ceramic among its plans at the time of the interview. Those comments describe the situation and plans he reported in 2024; they do not confirm current production.
The interview discusses the Hercules, Field Testing Unit and U.S. Space Force watches, but does not give a full current catalog or a model-by-model specification table. It is therefore not a reliable basis for comparing dimensions, water resistance, movements, prices, strap compatibility or present availability. Those details require current product information.

How did Micromilspec’s small-team production affect civilian releases?
Rye said Micromilspec was founded in 2019 and described a five-person team at the time of the interview. He attributed limited civilian production to the team juggling multiple projects and to production being scheduled and booked once a year. He also said military orders took priority for movements, with civilian models using movements available after those orders were fulfilled.
Those are figures and production details Rye gave in 2024, not verified current staffing, scheduling or availability. They help explain why public releases could be limited, but the interview alone cannot show whether a particular watch can be ordered now.
Has the U.S. Space Force watch actually been worn in space?
At the time of the interview, Rye said it had not: “Not yet! But there will be signs.” That is a time-specific answer from 30 November 2024, not confirmation of what has happened since.

What the interview can—and cannot—tell a watch buyer
The interview is most useful as a view into how Rye says the company translates a unit’s identity and wearer feedback into design decisions. It offers examples of functional questions—glove use, fit, bracelet comfort and material choices—but it is not a buying guide or current product listing.
For a purchase decision, check current Micromilspec product documentation for the exact model’s dimensions, movement, water resistance, price, availability and strap or bracelet fit.
