Net profit margin is net income divided by revenue for the same reporting period, multiplied by 100. It shows what percentage of revenue remains as net income after the expenses included in that figure. For example, $12,000 of net income on $100,000 of revenue produces a 12% margin.
What net profit margin measures
Net profit margin expresses net profit, also called net income, as a share of revenue. Net income is the amount left after expenses and taxes have been deducted from revenue, according to Investor.gov. A 12% margin means the business recorded 12 cents of net income for each dollar of revenue during the period.
The ratio summarizes the bottom-line result, but it does not identify which costs, gains, or other factors produced it. To understand that, examine the income statement rather than relying on the percentage alone.
How to calculate net profit margin
Net profit margin = net income ÷ revenue × 100
- Find net income (or net profit) and revenue on the income statement.
- Confirm that both figures cover the same period, such as the same quarter or fiscal year.
- Divide net income by revenue, then multiply the result by 100 to express it as a percentage.
For example, if a business reports $12,000 of net income and $100,000 of revenue for one quarter, the calculation is $12,000 ÷ $100,000 × 100 = 12%. This is an arithmetic example, not a reported company result.

Choose the revenue and profit figures carefully
Financial statements and company disclosures may label the denominator “revenue,” “total revenue,” “net revenues,” or “revenue from operations.” The numerator may be reported net income, net profit, or a company-defined adjusted measure. Filing examples illustrate that definitions can differ: one SEC-filed annual report describes net income margin as net income divided by total revenue, while a filing hosted by SEBI defines net profit ratio or margin using net profit after taxes divided by revenue from operations (SEC-filed example; SEBI-hosted example). These are company-specific examples, not a universal requirement to use identical labels in every calculation.
When comparing companies or periods, use consistent definitions where possible. If the available figures use different revenue lines or profit measures, state the difference rather than treating the resulting percentages as directly comparable.

How to interpret the result
- Positive margin: net income is positive relative to revenue for that period.
- Negative margin: the company reported a net loss relative to revenue. The percentage alone does not explain why.
- Changing margin: a rise or fall signals a change in the relationship between net income and revenue, but further statement review is needed to identify the factors behind it.
A higher margin is not automatically better in every comparison. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Financial Statements says, “As a general rule, desirable ratios vary by industry.” Compare a business with relevant peers and with its own results over time, while accounting for differences in business models and reporting periods. The SEC guide also explains how revenue, costs, operating expenses, interest, and income tax contribute to the income statement’s bottom line: SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Financial Statements.
Net profit margin versus operating margin
These ratios use different profit subtotals. Net profit margin uses net income, which reflects items below operating income, including interest and income tax expenses. Operating margin uses income from operations divided by net revenues; operating income is before interest and income tax expenses, as the SEC explains in its financial statement guide.

Because the measures answer different questions, label the margin you calculate and do not substitute one profit subtotal for another. Gross margin is another distinct measure, based on gross profit rather than operating income or net income.

It is not a measure of cash on hand
Net income and cash flow are related, but they are not equivalent. The SEC notes that cash flow statements provide information related to, but different from, the income statement’s net income. To assess cash generation, review the cash flow statement alongside the income statement (SEC, Financial Statements).

It does not explain the cause of a profit or loss
The ratio compresses the income statement into one percentage. It cannot show on its own whether a change came from operating costs, interest, taxes, or another line. Trace the figures through the income statement to assess what changed.
It may not be comparable to an adjusted measure
Companies may present adjusted or other non-GAAP measures alongside net income. An adjusted figure is not automatically the same as net income reported in the financial statements. The SEC staff explains how measures outside the GAAP income statement measure can fall under non-GAAP reporting guidance: SEC staff interpretations on non-GAAP financial measures. Check the company’s definition and any reconciliation before using an adjusted figure in a margin calculation.
