Mileage Plan is no longer the current program name: Alaska launched Atmos Rewards in August 2025, then brought HawaiianMiles members into the combined program on October 1, 2025. The changes announced for 2025 are best understood as a milestone in that transition—not as a complete guide to today’s rules.
What Alaska changed in Mileage Plan for 2025
In an October 2024 announcement, Alaska described more frequent milestone rewards, additional ways to earn elite-qualifying miles (EQMs), and revised upgrade priorities. These were announced rules for the 2025 program year, not today’s Atmos Rewards tier structure.
More milestone rewards
The announced milestone rewards began at 10,000 EQMs, with further milestones at 30,000, 55,000, 85,000, 150,000, 200,000, and 250,000 EQMs. Members could choose from options that included bonus miles, lounge access, trial status, rollover EQMs, and event access. Alaska presented these milestones alongside the then-current MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75K, and MVP Gold 100K thresholds. The announcement did not make those tier names or thresholds a permanent feature of the current program. Alaska’s October 2024 announcement sets out the original 2025 framework.
More ways to earn EQMs
For flights flown on or after January 1, 2025, Alaska said award travel would earn EQMs based on distance flown. Its example was a Seattle–Tokyo-Narita round trip of 9,538 miles, which it said would earn 9,538 EQMs. The announcement also described one EQM for every $3 in qualifying Alaska Airlines Visa card purchases, capped at 30,000 EQMs, and 1,000 EQMs for each 3,000 miles earned with eligible everyday travel partners. At 85,000 EQMs, members could select a 10,000-EQM rollover perk. These are specific terms from the 2025 announcement, not a summary of current Atmos Rewards earning.

Partner earning and award options
Alaska announced that flights booked through its website or app with 23 designated “book direct” partners would earn at least 100% of miles flown. The announced premium-cabin multipliers were 150% in Premium Economy, 250% in Business, and up to 350% in International First. It also announced multi-carrier award redemptions, Global Getaways, and Unlocked experiences. Those descriptions document what Alaska said it would add for 2025; current partner and redemption rules should be checked against Atmos Rewards’ live terms.
Upgrade priority
For the upgrade changes it announced, Alaska said Million Milers would receive the highest priority within their tier, followed by members ranked by EQMs earned rather than ticket price. A companion on the same reservation as an MVP member would be eligible for space-available complimentary upgrades. Alaska also said Saver or basic-economy tickets were excluded from some benefits described in the announcement. This was the 2025 announcement’s policy framing, not a blanket statement of current upgrade eligibility.

How Mileage Plan became Atmos Rewards
Alaska launched Atmos Rewards in August 2025 as the unified loyalty program for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. HawaiianMiles members joined on October 1, 2025, with each Mileage Plan mile or HawaiianMiles mile converted to one Atmos Rewards point. Alaska said points retain their value, do not expire, and can be redeemed on Alaska, Hawaiian, and global airline partners. Alaska’s launch announcement describes the consolidation and conversion.
The unified program connects members to Alaska, Hawaiian, oneworld, and more than 30 other airline partners. Alaska’s September 2026 announcement described service to more than 1,100 destinations. Atmos Communities include Global Locals, Families on the Go, Culinary Journeys, Active Escapes, Club 49, and Huakaʻi by Hawaiian. Alaska has described community-specific benefits, partner offers, flight deals, bonus-point challenges, and some experience discounts; eligibility and availability depend on the offer, location, and membership. It also named Alterra Mountain Company, Nordstrom, and Pebble Beach Resorts as upcoming lifestyle collaborations. Alaska’s September 2026 program announcement provides the current overview of these features.

How Atmos Rewards flight earning works through 2026
For flights through December 31, 2026, the published earning chart uses fare class and, for partner travel, additional eligibility rules. Alaska and Hawaiian economy fares earn different rates by class: Y/B earns 150% total points and status points; H/K earns 125%; and M/L/V/S/N/Q/O/G earns 100%. These percentages come from the current chart, not the 2025 Mileage Plan announcement. The Alaska and Hawaiian flight earning chart is the place to check the applicable fare and dates.
One important exception is Saver fare class X: Saver bookings made on or after June 11, 2026, and flown on or after August 1, 2026, earn no Atmos points or status points, according to the chart. Those flights still count toward Million Miler lifetime flown miles at 100% of actual distance.

Partner flights and award tickets
Partner earning can depend on the airline, booking channel, flight number, and fare class. Atmos Rewards’ partner FAQ says tickets booked directly through Alaska or Hawaiian with ticket numbers beginning 027 qualify under the rule it describes, while some bookings made through a partner or a third party qualify and others do not. Check the specific airline’s partner page before buying. The partner-flight rules and the relevant airline’s earning chart determine the details.
Partner award tickets do not earn redeemable points. However, partner award flights booked through Alaska or Hawaiian earn status points based on miles flown under the rule described in the FAQ. That distinction matters when comparing award travel with paid tickets: an award flight may contribute to status without earning redeemable points.

Three earning choices for flights departing in 2027
Alaska announced on September 29, 2026, that members can choose how they earn for flights departing on or after January 1, 2027. The choices become selectable starting October 1, 2026. The announcement describes this as a choice among distance, price, or segments, rather than a rule that applies to flights in 2026. Alaska’s announcement says members can change their selection once per calendar year for future travel.
| Earning basis | Published rate for 2027 departures | Travel pattern it may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Distance traveled | 1 point per mile flown | Longer itineraries, especially when eligible spend is modest relative to distance |
| Price paid | 5 points per $1 spent on flight purchases, including eligible premium-cabin upgrades | Higher eligible flight spend relative to miles flown |
| Segments flown | 500 points per segment | Trips with more segments, compared with their distance or eligible spend |
Current members who do not select an option continue to earn by distance. People who join on or after January 1, 2027, default to price-based earning. Because the options reward different inputs, no choice is automatically best: compare the points each would produce for the trips you actually expect to take. The announcement’s rates are for flights departing in 2027 and should not be applied to 2026 departures.
How to compare the options for your travel
For a given itinerary, estimate points under each available basis using the announced rates, then compare the results across the trips you expect to take. Use the flight’s miles, eligible flight spend, or number of segments as appropriate; a long trip, an expensive ticket, and a multi-stop itinerary can produce different winners. For partner travel, first confirm the booking’s eligibility, since carrier, fare class, flight number, and booking method can affect earning.
- Distance: Look at total flown miles. This basis may favor long routes when the fare is relatively inexpensive.
- Price: Use eligible flight purchases and qualifying premium-cabin upgrades, not a ticket’s total cost if some charges do not qualify under the terms. It may favor higher-spend itineraries.
- Segments: Count each qualifying flight segment. It may favor itineraries with multiple flights, but a connection is not inherently better unless its segment earnings outweigh the alternatives.
- Award travel: Separate redeemable points from status points. The partner award rule described above provides status points for qualifying awards booked through Alaska or Hawaiian, but not redeemable points.
For personal-finance purposes, compare the earning outcome with the total cost and convenience of the trip. Do not spend more or add an unnecessary connection solely to chase points unless the expected value makes sense for your own plans. The points rates alone do not establish the value of a redemption, which depends on award availability and the itinerary you can book.
What to verify before booking
Airline loyalty terms can change, and the program has already moved from Mileage Plan to Atmos Rewards. Before booking, confirm the current earning chart and any offer-specific terms, especially for a Saver fare, partner flight, or award itinerary. For a partner flight, check the partner’s page for the exact fare class and booking channel rather than assuming every ticket on that airline earns the same way.
