Uncommon Thinkers: Boundless CEO Xiao Wang on Why Immigration Is So Hard

Xiao Wang’s path to founding Boundless began with a family problem: the difficulty and expense of navigating the U.S. green-card process. After investigating that problem in 2016, he helped build a company that uses technology to support immigration applications and connect applicants with legal help.

How Wang’s family experience shaped the idea

Wang immigrated from China to the United States with his parents when he was three, according to GeekWire’s 2023 profile. He saw his parents struggle with the green-card process and spend months of rent money on immigration attorneys.

Boundless’s own history describes a related memory: Wang and his father spent nights and weekends working through complex forms. That account comes from the company, which says Wang immigrated with his parents in the late 1980s; it is useful context for the company’s origin story, not independent reporting about its later performance.

From a question to an investigation

In 2016, while working as an Amazon product manager, Wang began trying to understand why immigration was so difficult. GeekWire reports that he spent nights, weekends, and vacation time speaking with hundreds of families, government officials, policymakers, and attorneys.

Wang described the motivation in GeekWire’s interview: “If you learn too much about a problem and you really understand the need and the gap and the pain that it’s causing people, you get to a point where you can’t not do something about it. Especially when the problem is close to home.”

How Boundless began and what it does

Wang co-founded Boundless with Doug Rand and Serdar Sutay. GeekWire reports that the company spun out of Pioneer Square Labs in 2017. Boundless says it began that year with a product for marriage-based adjustment-of-status green-card applications.

The company describes its work today as covering family immigration, employment-based immigration, and corporate immigration management. GeekWire characterizes its approach as using technology to streamline how immigrants connect with lawyers and file applications for spousal visas and U.S. citizenship. Those descriptions explain the company’s stated model; they do not mean that software removes the legal complexity of an individual case or assures an outcome.

What the reported customer and outcome figures mean

Reach and success-rate numbers associated with Boundless are reported by different publishers and are not directly interchangeable. GeekWire’s November 7, 2023 profile said the company had helped more than 100,000 families and reported a 99.9% visa approval rate. Boundless’s company history and media page, accessed October 8, 2026, each display 100K-plus immigrants helped and a 99.7% success rate. The labels and scope differ, and none of these figures is established in the cited material as an independently audited measure or a prediction of any applicant’s result.

Why the story matters to personal finances

Wang’s motivation reflects a practical financial pressure: immigration applications can involve complicated paperwork and legal fees that compete with ordinary household costs. GeekWire’s account of his parents’ experience helps explain why he saw the process as a problem worth investigating, rather than merely an opportunity to build a technology product.

Boundless’s current service areas extend beyond the family-based applications that marked its beginning, but the profile is not a comparison of immigration providers. It does not establish like-for-like pricing, eligibility, legal support, or outcomes across competing services. Applicants evaluating any assistance should distinguish a company’s description of its tools and results from advice about their own case.
