Ubisoft CEO Apologizes to Employees for Tone-Deaf Email, but Major Concerns Remain

Ubisoft's CEO apologized in January 2023 for an email that staff read as shifting blame onto them. The apology addressed wording, not direction, and later 2026 criticism concerns different events.

In January 2023, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot apologized after employees objected to an internal email that said “the ball is in your court now.” Staff read the line as shifting responsibility for the company’s weak results and uncertain direction onto them. Guillemot apologized for how the wording was perceived, but the reporting from that period says the apology did not answer employees’ questions about where the company was heading. Later reporting from 2026 describes further criticism, but it concerns different events and should not be read as part of the 2023 dispute.

What the email said and why employees objected

HotHardware published its report on January 19, 2023. It said Guillemot asked developers to look inward and wrote that “the ball is in your court now.” An employee responded by asking, in substance, why staff had to fix problems that management had mishandled. The same report said a half-day strike was planned at Ubisoft Paris for January 27.

The employee reaction, as reproduced in the reporting, was: “The ball is now in our court—for years it has been in your court so why did you mishandle the ball so badly so we, the workers, have to fix it for you?”

GameSpot’s January 18, 2023 report described the phrase as widely seen as management shirking responsibility. The objection was not about the words alone. It was about who was being asked to carry the consequences of decisions employees did not make.

The apology and what it left unanswered

At an internal meeting, an employee challenged management over how responsibility was being allocated. Guillemot replied: “I heard your feedback and I’m sorry this was perceived that way,” according to GameSpot. He said he had meant to recognize employees’ talent and energy, and he described the work as a collective journey.

GameSpot reported that sources said the apology did not settle concerns and that the meeting was “light on specifics.” HotHardware also reported a later employee response that questioned direction: “It appears that management is out of touch with games saying that we need to adapt to an evolving industry, why are we chasing trends instead of setting them?” This wording is the article’s report of an employee’s response, not a verbatim statement from a named speaker.

Based on the reporting, the apology did the following and did not do the following:

The business backdrop reported at the time

Reporting from January 2023 tied the dispute to disappointing financial results, canceled or delayed games, and restructuring. GameSpot reported that some recent releases underperformed expectations. This is reported context for the employee reaction, not a full account of Ubisoft’s finances, and it does not establish the company’s financial position beyond those reports.

Ubisoft’s 2020 workplace commitments

The 2023 dispute followed a workplace crisis that Ubisoft had already addressed publicly. In July 2020, after misconduct allegations, Ubisoft acknowledged that it had fallen short of its obligation to guarantee a safe and inclusive workplace. Guillemot, in the company statement, said: “Ubisoft has fallen short in its obligation to guarantee a safe and inclusive workplace environment for its employees.” The statement also said: “This is unacceptable, as toxic behaviors are in direct contrast to values on which I have never compromised — and never will.” It described management departures and a planned overhaul of how creative teams worked together.

A company financial update later that month listed the measures Ubisoft announced:

  • investigations by external consultants
  • an anonymous reporting platform
  • changes to HR processes
  • training
  • anonymous employee feedback and listening sessions

These are the company’s own descriptions of commitments. They show what Ubisoft said it would do. They do not show whether those measures worked or resolved later employee concerns.

Later reporting from 2026

Workplace and leadership criticism continued to appear in coverage of Ubisoft after 2023, but the reporting does not show a continuous or uniform employee view across 2023 through 2026. The 2026 reports concern a different set of events.

Union representatives, February 2026

Game Developer quoted two Ubisoft Paris union representatives who argued that management could not rebuild employee trust while Guillemot remained CEO. Their comments came after a company reset that included studio closures, cancellations, planned cost-cutting, and a five-day return-to-office mandate. These are the representatives’ views, not findings about the company.

Internal town hall, reported by Insider Gaming

Insider Gaming reported employee criticism of a later internal town hall. Employees raised concerns about the five-day office policy, the restructuring, expected headcount reductions, and communication. The story relies on more than a dozen anonymous employee sources and says the outlet received a recording on the condition that it not be made public. The report also includes management statements: Guillemot explained the office policy, and CFO Frederik Duguet commented on future headcount.

What to look for in a leadership apology

A workplace apology can be judged on whether it changes anything that employees can check. The Ubisoft reporting suggests these questions are useful:

  • Does the apology name the specific words or decisions that caused the reaction?
  • Does it say what happens next, and by when?
  • Does it answer the direction question, or only the tone question?
  • Are the employee reactions reported as attributed views, or as settled facts?
  • Does the company publish any measurable follow-up, such as a dated policy change or a stated headcount plan?

In the 2023 case, the reporting answers the first and fifth questions only partly, and it does not show the company answering the second or third.
