It can show how many outputs remain unspent, their values and types, when they were created, and how they are distributed across transactions. Those findings can help describe a chain’s data and validation demands—but only when the chain, snapshot date, metric definitions, and methods are clear. Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Dash should not be treated as if their implementations or UTXO distributions are identical.
What is a UTXO?
A UTXO, or unspent transaction output, is an output created by an earlier transaction that has not yet been spent. In a UTXO-based system, a wallet’s displayed balance is a convenient summary of spendable outputs; it is not necessarily a single account balance stored on the chain. Bitcoin’s developer guide describes value as moving from transaction to transaction, while Dash documentation explains that a wallet balance can represent funds held in one or more UTXOs.
Each output can be spent only once. A later transaction identifies the earlier output using its transaction ID and output index, consumes it as an input, and creates one or more new outputs. The total value of the new outputs cannot exceed the value consumed; the difference can be paid as a transaction fee. See the Bitcoin developer guide to the block chain and the Dash Core Guide to transactions.
A simple example
If a transaction consumes one output worth 1 BTC and creates outputs worth 0.6 BTC and 0.39 BTC, the remaining 0.01 BTC is not a new spendable output in this example; it is the difference available for the fee. In ordinary use, a wallet may also create an output returning the unspent portion to the sender. The transaction’s actual outputs and fee depend on its construction.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What can UTXO analysis reveal?
A UTXO-set analysis looks at outputs that remain unspent at a particular point in a chain’s history. The Bitcoin UTXO-set study by Delgado-Segura, Pérez-Solà, Navarro-Arribas, and Herrera-Joancomartí describes the set as essential for full nodes validating transactions: nodes use it to check whether inputs refer to spendable outputs. The set’s size affects storage needs, and the efficiency of accessing it affects validation speed. The paper’s STATUS tool parsed Bitcoin Core chainstate for UTXO-level analysis and transaction-level aggregation.
- Count and value: how many outputs are unspent and how their values are distributed.
- Output or script type: what kinds of locking conditions are represented in the set.
- Creation height or age: when outputs entered the set, measured by block height or a clearly specified time basis.
- Dust or economic spendability: which outputs fall below a stated threshold under a specified fee assumption.
- Transaction-level concentration: how unspent outputs group by the transactions that created them.
These measures describe a dataset, not the identities or behavior of particular people. Public transaction links alone do not establish who owns an output. Also, “dust” is not a universal fixed label: an analysis must state the threshold or fee rate used, since an output’s economic usefulness depends on those assumptions.

What a historical Bitcoin snapshot shows—and does not show
The 2017 Bitcoin UTXO-set paper analyzed block 491,868, corresponding to 2017-10-26 at 13:13:38, and reported approximately 52.5 million UTXOs in the set it examined. That figure is a historical snapshot, not a current Bitcoin count or a comparison with today’s Litecoin or Dash sets. Its classifications and implementation details likewise belong to the Bitcoin Core versions and data period studied. Read the paper, “Analysis of the Bitcoin UTXO set”, for its methods and findings.
How Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Dash comparisons differ
The basic UTXO concept can support analysis across chains, but a shared label does not prove that consensus rules, scripts, wallet behavior, or current distributions are the same. The available evidence here is strongest for Bitcoin mechanics and a historical Bitcoin study, and for Dash transaction documentation.

| Asset | What the cited sources establish | What should not be inferred |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | The developer guide describes inputs spending earlier outputs, outputs being spendable once, and transaction value and fees. The 2017 paper analyzes a historical Bitcoin UTXO set and explains its node-validation context. | The paper’s 2017 count or implementation-specific findings should not be presented as current figures. |
| Dash | Dash’s guide describes the UTXO lifecycle and states that a displayed wallet balance may represent one or more UTXOs. Dash documentation also says coinbase outputs cannot be spent for at least 100 blocks. | The 100-block maturity rule is Dash-specific in the cited material and should not be generalized to all UTXO assets. |
| Litecoin | The cited BitGo documentation lists selected LTC address-type support in BitGo wallets: UTXO Address Types. | That wallet-vendor documentation does not establish all Litecoin consensus, script, or UTXO-analysis differences. |
Dash documentation characterizes the project as Bitcoin-based and emphasizes its two-tier network and payments focus. Those are project descriptions, not independently measured comparative performance results; see Dash’s “What is Dash?” page. For the Dash maturity detail, see its transaction data guide.

A cross-chain comparison is useful only if its measurement choices are visible. For each chain, state the dataset and snapshot height or date, the metric definition, and the tool or method used. A count taken at one height cannot be treated as directly comparable to a count from another period without explaining the difference.

- Snapshot: name the chain, block height, and date/time when the set was measured.
- Count and value: report the number of UTXOs and explain whether values are also grouped, averaged, or otherwise summarized.
- Output types: define how script or address-related types are classified, and identify unsupported or unclassified outputs if relevant.
- Age: explain whether age means blocks since creation or elapsed calendar time.
- Dust or unprofitable outputs: give the threshold and fee-rate assumption; do not use “dust” as though it had one chain-independent meaning.
- Grouping: distinguish output-level results from transaction-level aggregates.
- Method: name the data source, parser or tool, and relevant software version so readers can interpret implementation-dependent results.
Without those details, differences may reflect mismatched dates, definitions, or tooling rather than meaningful differences between assets. The historical Bitcoin study motivates several of these measurement axes, but it does not supply current, directly comparable figures for Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Dash.
