USDA’s November 22, 2022 invitation asked agricultural producers to complete the 2022 Census of Agriculture online or by mail. The response deadline was February 6, 2023, so this is a historical notice—not a current request to submit that census.

What USDA asked producers to do

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) invited producers to respond to the five-year Census of Agriculture. In its November 22, 2022 announcement, USDA said survey codes were being mailed to known agricultural producers in the 50 states, with paper questionnaires to follow in December.

Producers could use the unique code printed on the mailed questionnaire to access the online form at agcounts.usda.gov, or complete and return the paper questionnaire. USDA instructed recipients to respond once, regardless of which method they used.

Who the 2022 Census covered

The announcement included farms and ranches of every size, in urban and rural areas, if they produced and sold—or normally would have sold—at least $1,000 in agricultural products during 2022. That $1,000 figure was the eligibility threshold, not a census result.

#1 Best Overall

NASS’s 2022 Census FAQ advised people who received a questionnaire to respond even if they did not consider themselves farmers. NASS could use their answers to update its records, and the agency’s definition likewise focused on production and sales (or expected sales) during the census year.

What information the Census collected

The Census covered land use and ownership, producer characteristics, production practices, income, and expenditures, among other subjects. The 2022 questionnaire added questions about precision agriculture and hemp production, included questions about hair sheep, and updated questions on internet access.

NASS describes the Census as a comprehensive, impartial source of information about U.S. agricultural operations, with data for states, counties, and territories. The November 2022 invitation was a request for responses, not a release of Census findings; it did not report results from the completed Census.

Legal requirement and confidentiality

The announcement said responding was required under Title 7 U.S.C. 2204(g). It also said that the same law limited NASS’s use of reported information to statistical purposes and required publication in aggregate form, without identifying individual producers or operations. The FAQ describes those same confidentiality commitments.

Historical online-response details

These instructions applied to the 2022 Census and should not be treated as current submission guidance. NASS’s FAQ said respondents could check the portal’s My Surveys area for the date a response was submitted. A mailed response might not show as received immediately. If someone had already completed the online questionnaire, they did not need to return the paper form as well.

The online form could skip questions that did not apply. If a browser compatibility issue arose, the FAQ recommended trying another updated browser or device. Since the 2022 deadline has passed, these details are useful only for understanding how that response process worked.

Why the invitation mattered

Agricultural Census data help describe the structure and economics of farming across the country. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the information could influence policy decisions affecting producers and their communities; NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer thanked farmers and ranchers for responding and noted the agency’s effort to make participation more convenient.
