USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced two 2022 Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup windows: General CRP ran Jan. 31 through March 11, and Grassland CRP ran April 4 through May 13. Those dates have passed; they are historical, not current application deadlines. Continuous CRP was described as an ongoing enrollment route. For current opportunities, contact your local USDA Service Center or check with FSA.

What were the CRP signup dates announced for 2022?

Enrollment option 2022 signup dates Purpose described by FSA
General CRP Jan. 31–March 11, 2022 Establish long-term, resource-conserving plant cover on cropland to help control erosion, improve water quality and enhance wildlife habitat.
Grassland CRP April 4–May 13, 2022 Protect grassland, including rangeland and pastureland and certain other lands, while keeping land in working grazing use.
Continuous CRP Ongoing signup, according to the Jan. 26, 2022 announcement Enroll eligible acres through continuous opportunities, including the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) and State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE).

These windows were announced by USDA FSA on Jan. 26, 2022. The announcement does not establish current signup dates or confirm that any particular offer is open now. For current availability, use USDA’s Farm Service Agency information and contact your local Service Center.

How did General and Grassland CRP differ?

General CRP: conservation cover on cropland

General CRP was presented as an option for establishing approved grasses, trees or other resource-conserving plant species on cropland. The intended benefits included reducing soil erosion, improving water quality and supporting wildlife habitat. It is the pathway described in the announcement for landowners whose goal is to establish conservation plantings rather than maintain grazing use.

Grassland CRP: protection alongside grazing

Grassland CRP focused on protecting grassland while retaining its working use for grazing. The announcement included rangeland, pastureland and certain other lands in its description. Its purpose differs from General CRP: the emphasis is on maintaining grassland and grazing, not converting the land to newly established conservation cover.

What climate-smart incentives did the announcement describe?

For General and Continuous CRP signups, FSA said the Climate-Smart Practice Incentive would provide an annual incentive based on the benefits of the practice type. Examples named in the announcement included establishing trees and permanent grasses, developing wildlife habitat, and restoring wetlands. It did not give a universal payment amount or enough information to calculate what a specific parcel or applicant might receive; the applicable practice and offer would need to be confirmed with FSA.

How do I sign up for CRP?

The Jan. 26, 2022 release directed interested landowners and producers to their local USDA Service Center to learn more or apply. Because the stated General and Grassland windows were in 2022, anyone considering CRP now should ask FSA which enrollment opportunities are currently available and whether their land and proposed practices fit them.

  1. Find and contact your local USDA Service Center through FSA for current enrollment information.
  2. Explain the land’s current use and your goal: conservation planting on cropland, protection of working grassland, or a continuous enrollment opportunity.
  3. Ask the Service Center or your conservation planner about parcel eligibility, approved practices, required application materials, and any applicable incentive or payment terms before making commitments.

The announcement did not provide a complete application checklist or make eligibility determinations for individual parcels. It also did not identify particular seed species or commercial products. Do not assume that a generic grass-seed mix qualifies; confirm the approved species, mix and site requirements with FSA or a conservation planner before purchasing seed.

What scale did USDA report for the program?

In its 2022 announcement, USDA FSA reported that 4.6 million acres had been enrolled in CRP signups during 2021, including 2.5 million acres in what it described as the largest Grassland CRP signup in history at that time. The release said 22.1 million acres were then enrolled in CRP against a 25.5-million-acre cap for fiscal year 2022. These are administrative figures reported by FSA in 2022, not estimates of what an individual applicant could enroll or earn.

The same release said USDA invested $10 million in the CRP Monitoring, Assessment and Evaluation program in 2021. A later FSA report stated that more than 3.1 million acres were accepted through the 2022 Grassland CRP signup; that is a subsequent outcome figure, not the 2021 enrollment statistic. See FSA’s 2023 report on accepted 2022 Grassland CRP acres.
