Ubisoft announced on January 7, 2026, that it would close its Halifax studio, affecting 71 positions—just 20 days after the workers’ union certification was approved. The timing prompted CWA Canada to file a labour-board complaint alleging the closure was intended to keep out the union. Ubisoft’s reported explanation was that the closure was part of restructuring and cost-cutting efforts already under way. The available reporting establishes the sequence and the competing claims, but not the company’s motive or a public legal finding on the closure.
What happened, and when?
Halifax employees announced their intention to unionize with CWA Canada Local 30111 on June 18, 2025. The union’s timeline says Ubisoft initially challenged the proposed bargaining unit, then withdrew its challenges on December 8. Certification was approved on December 18, with 74% of eligible voters in favour, according to the union’s timeline.
On January 7, 2026, Ubisoft announced that it would close the studio, affecting 71 positions. That announcement came 20 days after certification. CWA Canada filed a complaint with the Nova Scotia Labour Board on January 13, alleging that the closure was intended to keep out the union.
On April 14, CWA Canada said the laid-off workers had voted overwhelmingly to approve a settlement. The union reported that the studio had 71 workers, including 61 union members. It did not disclose the settlement terms, which it said were confidential.

Why did Ubisoft say it was closing the studio?
In a statement to CityNews Halifax, Ubisoft linked the decision to company-wide restructuring and cost optimization that it said had begun before the Halifax unionization process. The company told the outlet: “Over the past 24 months, Ubisoft has undertaken company-wide actions to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and reduce costs.” It added: “As part of this, Ubisoft has made the difficult decision to close its Halifax studio.”
This is Ubisoft’s stated rationale as reported by CityNews, not an independently verified account of the internal decision-making. CWA Canada said Ubisoft denied a connection to unionization and attributed the closure to declining revenue and restructuring. That account of the company’s response comes from the union.

What did the union allege?
CWA Canada said the closeness of the certification and closure raised questions, sought information about the rationale, and filed a complaint alleging the studio was shut down to keep out the union. The complaint is an allegation, not a finding that Ubisoft violated labour law. CWA Canada President Carmel Smyth said on January 7 that the union would “pursue every legal recourse to ensure that the rights of these workers are respected and not infringed in any way.”
The workers’ June announcement described unionization as a way to have a meaningful voice in decisions and build a secure, supported workplace. Those were the stated aims of the workers who announced the organizing effort, not necessarily a view shared by every employee.

What does the settlement tell us?
CWA Canada reported that workers approved a settlement in April 2026, but its terms—including any compensation—were confidential. The announcement does not establish that the settlement included an admission, resolved the dispute over motive, or produced a ruling on the closure’s legality. The sources available here do not establish a public legal finding on whether unionization caused the closure.
Former employee Jon Huffman told CWA Canada that the closure surprised employees and front-line managers, saying they were “in the middle of many on-going and new projects, and doing great work.” His account describes his experience; it does not determine why Ubisoft made its decision.

What is established—and what remains disputed?
| Question | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| When were workers certified? | The union’s timeline says certification was approved on December 18, 2025, with 74% of eligible voters in favour. |
| When and how many jobs were affected? | Ubisoft announced the closure on January 7, 2026; CityNews reported that 71 positions were affected. |
| What reason did Ubisoft give? | CityNews reported Ubisoft’s explanation that the closure was part of company-wide restructuring and cost optimization begun before unionization. |
| What did the union claim? | CWA Canada filed a complaint alleging the closure was intended to keep out the union. The reviewed sources do not establish that allegation as a legal finding. |
| What did the settlement decide? | CWA Canada said workers approved a settlement, but the terms were confidential; the sources do not establish a public decision on motive or legality. |
The short interval between certification and the closure is documented. So are Ubisoft’s restructuring explanation, the union’s allegation, and the later confidential settlement. The available sources do not resolve the central disputed question: whether the unionization process caused the studio’s closure.
