Those are forecasts—not final harvest or stock figures—and the report’s global balances moved in different directions by crop.
What the March WASDE changed
The U.S. balance sheets for corn, soybeans and wheat showed no month-to-month change in projected 2025/26 ending stocks. USDA’s report did not provide a basis for treating “unchanged” as a new stock level: it means the forecasts were held at their February estimates.
Outside the United States, USDA lowered Argentina’s crop estimates. For corn, the agency cited February dryness and reduced yield prospects. Higher production estimates for Ukraine and Brazil partly offset the decline in foreign corn production. Argentina’s soybean estimate fell by 0.5 million metric tons to 48 million metric tons; lower expected yields were partly offset by higher area.
How the global stock forecasts differed
The report was not uniformly bullish or bearish across crops. USDA raised projected world corn ending stocks by 3.8 million metric tons to 292.8 million metric tons. World wheat ending stocks were forecast to decline by 0.6 million metric tons to 277.0 million metric tons, which USDA’s Economic Research Service described as a five-year high.

What “ending stocks” means—and what it does not
Ending stocks are the projected supply remaining at the end of a marketing year after accounting for supply and use. They help describe the expected balance between availability and demand; they are not a direct measure of a crop’s final harvest, nor do they guarantee a particular price direction.
WASDE is a monthly forecast prepared by USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board. The March figures therefore represent the agency’s estimates as of that report, not settled outcomes. Later monthly reports can revise the same 2025/26 estimates as information changes. USDA explains the report’s scope and release schedule on its WASDE Report page.

What the contemporaneous trade reaction said
In a March 10, 2026 report for Successful Farming, hedging strategist Cory Bratland of AgMarket.Net said there was no market reaction to the report’s numbers. He said attention would return to the U.S./Iran conflict and energy prices, then shift to the March 31 Prospective Plantings and quarterly Grain Stocks reports, with corn and soybean acreage in focus amid higher nitrogen prices. That was his contemporaneous market view, not a USDA conclusion or a current market assessment.
Broker Jeremy McCann of Farmer’s Keeper told Successful Farming that lower Argentine corn production was the report’s most positive news for the market, but that it was offset by higher Brazilian production. These comments describe traders’ interpretation at the time; they do not change the distinction between crop-production estimates and ending-stock forecasts.
