Founded in 2019 by former Uber employees Ryan Waliany and Jennifer Bronzo, the company uses technology to price rentals, place tenants and manage properties. That round is a milestone in Doorstead’s funding history, not its latest: the company announced a $21.5 million Series B in 2026.
What Doorstead does
Doorstead connects rental pricing and tenant placement with property management. Its 2021 model included a rental estimate and guaranteed-rent offer, property preparation, tenant screening and placement, and ongoing management. The guarantee was a distinctive part of the early pitch: Doorstead said it would pay owners from a specified date, taking on vacancy risk under the terms of its offer.
That structure does not establish that every current Doorstead service or contract includes a rent guarantee. Owners should confirm the terms offered in their location and review the agreement before relying on a guaranteed payment.
Place and Manage
Doorstead currently describes two service levels on its company site: Place, for tenant placement, and Manage, for full-service property management. The company says Manage includes tenant placement, leasing, rent collection, maintenance and tenant support; owners retain final say on tenants and key decisions. Its service explainer also describes marketing, showings, tenant screening and lease signing.

How the 2021 funding fits into Doorstead’s history
| Date | Milestone | Details |
|---|---|---|
| October 7, 2019 | Seed financing | TechCrunch reported a $3.3 million seed round co-led by M13 and Silicon Valley Data Capital. The coverage described Doorstead’s guaranteed-rent management model for single-family homes. TechCrunch |
| April 15, 2021 | Series A | GeekWire reported $12.5 million led by Madrona Venture Group, with other backers including executives from Opendoor, Uber and DocuSign. GeekWire |
| April 30, 2026 | Series B and acquisition | Doorstead announced $21.5 million in Series B funding, with participation by Avanta Ventures, Madrona, MetaProp and M13, and said it had acquired Knox Financial’s Massachusetts portfolio. These are company-announced details. Doorstead |
Doorstead dates its founding to April 2019. GeekWire described founders Ryan Waliany and Jennifer Bronzo as former Uber employees in its 2021 report. The company’s later announcement also provides founder background.
How Doorstead’s rental model was described in 2021
GeekWire reported that Doorstead could provide a guaranteed rental offer in less than 24 hours, then help prepare the property, screen tenants and negotiate rent. The company’s model addressed a familiar landlord risk: an empty property can mean lost income while the owner still faces expenses. Doorstead said it would cover a shortfall if its estimate was too low, while additional rent above the estimate went to the owner. Those details describe the historical offer, not necessarily current contract terms.

At the time, GeekWire reported fees of approximately 8% of monthly rent plus 50% of one month’s rent when a tenant was placed. In an April 2026 explainer, Doorstead claims a 5% management fee. The figures come from different dates and sources and should not be treated as a single, universally applicable current price. Ask Doorstead for the current local fee schedule and written agreement before comparing costs.
The early model also reflected a broader attempt to systematize the management process. In 2019, CEO Ryan Waliany told TechCrunch, “We’re in the process of Uber’izing each step of the property management life cycle.”

What the reported scale figures do—and do not—show
In April 2021, GeekWire reported that Doorstead managed more than 300 properties in the Bay Area, had recently launched in Los Angeles and Orange County, and had more than $10 million of rent under management. Those are historical, article-reported figures, not current operating totals.
In its 2026 announcement, Doorstead said more than 2,000 property owners had relied on the company. That company-reported owner count is a different measure from the 2021 property count, so the two figures do not establish a like-for-like growth comparison. The company also cited its Knox Financial portfolio acquisition as an expansion into Massachusetts.

What landlords should verify before choosing a service
The funding news explains how Doorstead was financed; it does not tell an owner whether the service is the right fit. Before signing, compare the actual local offer and contract against the alternatives available to you.
