Broader destination markets helped corn grow and softened the soybean decline, but they did not fully replace lost Chinese demand for soybeans. The crop-specific figures below are projections based on data through October for soybeans and early November for corn—not final full-year shipment totals.
How did U.S. corn and soybean exports compare in 2025?
Purdue University’s Center for Commercial Agriculture compared destination shares using USDA export data available through October 2025 for soybeans and early November for corn. It also cited USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) projections for full-year export volumes.
| Crop | 2025 projected exports | Change from 2024 | Share of U.S. production | What the destination data showed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soybeans | 44.50 million metric tons | Down 13% | 38% | China’s share fell sharply; several other destinations gained share. |
| Corn | 78 million metric tons | Up 8% | 18% | Mexico, Japan, and Colombia lost share, while the rest of the world gained. |
These volume and production-share figures are Purdue’s summary of USDA WASDE projections for 2025, not completed final totals. Destination shares describe the distribution of exports, not the absolute tonnage shipped to each country. A market’s share can change as total exports change.
Why did soybean exports decline despite new markets?
China was the largest destination in the comparison: it accounted for 46.7% of U.S. soybean exports in 2024, but 18.7% in Purdue’s 2025 reporting-period data. Over the same comparison, “Rest of the world” rose to 21.6%; the European Union’s share reached 12.9%, and Mexico’s reached 12.6%. Egypt, Japan, and Indonesia also featured among the expanded destinations.
#1 Best Overall
- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
The expanded market base helped cushion the loss of Chinese demand, but the projected 13% decline in total soybean exports shows that it did not fully replace it. Purdue’s analysis describes diversification as a buffer, not a complete substitute for the scale of the prior Chinese market.
Winning new buyers is not instant. Purdue notes that diversification can take relationship-building, adaptation to local requirements, and sometimes infrastructure investment. Those steps can broaden a market over time, but they do not guarantee that new demand will match the size or timing of a lost buyer’s purchases.

How did corn exports grow while traditional destinations lost share?
Corn exports were projected at 78 million metric tons for 2025, 8% above 2024, even though several leading destinations made up a smaller share of shipments. Mexico’s share fell from 38% in 2024 to 29% in Purdue’s 2025 comparison; Japan’s fell from 20% to 18%, and Colombia’s from 12% to 9%. The “Rest of the world” share rose from 12% to 15%.
Purdue highlighted the scale of monthly shipments in its comparison: exports in May 2025 were about 8.5 million metric tons, versus 6 million in May 2024; October shipments were about 8 million, compared with 4.5 million a year earlier. These are monthly figures in Purdue’s analysis, distinct from the projected full-year total.

What does full-year U.S. agricultural trade data add?
USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS), in an overview updated June 30, 2026, reported that total U.S. agricultural export value was $171 billion in 2025, down from its 2022 peak. ERS cited falling global commodity prices, a strong dollar, and shifting demand as contributors to the broader trade picture.

ERS also reported that U.S. agricultural exports to China fell 66% from 2024 to $8.4 billion in 2025, and China ranked sixth among U.S. agricultural export markets. ERS associated the decline with reciprocal tariffs and lower soybean demand. Agricultural exports to the European Union reached a record $14.5 billion in 2025, led by strong corn and tree nut sales.
Those ERS figures are completed full-year values for U.S. agriculture as a whole—not corn or soybean export tonnage. They provide context for the trade environment, but should not be substituted for Purdue’s crop-specific, in-year volume projections.

What the figures mean for market concentration
Diversification matters because it can reduce exposure to any one buyer. The 2025 comparison suggests that this played out differently across crops: corn’s projected volume grew as destinations broadened, while soybean diversification softened a decline tied in part to reduced Chinese demand. Neither destination shares nor sector-wide dollar values alone show how profitable exports were for individual farms or how much any one market shift caused the change in volume.
Quick Recap
- Soybeans: fewer exports were projected overall despite a much smaller Chinese share and gains in several alternative markets.
- Corn: exports were projected to grow even as Mexico, Japan, and Colombia accounted for smaller shares.
- For both crops: the Purdue totals are projections and its destination comparisons use different 2025 cutoffs, so they are not final, same-period annual shipment comparisons.
