U.S. Citizens Warned Over Puerto Vallarta Airport Flight Cancellations (February 2026)

Flights at Puerto Vallarta’s Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport were canceled and airport operations were suspended on Sunday, February 22, 2026. The suspension followed retaliatory violence after a Mexican military operation that killed cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico told Americans in Puerto Vallarta and other affected areas to shelter in place. This was an emergency shutdown, not a permanent closure. The reporting covering it does not establish whether the airport or its schedules are running normally on October 8, 2026, so check current status before you pay for or change any trip.

What happened on February 22, 2026

On February 22, the Mexican military killed Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. Contemporary reporting described roadblocks, burning vehicles, road closures and other retaliatory violence in Jalisco and elsewhere. At Puerto Vallarta’s airport, operations were suspended and all arrivals and departures were canceled, leaving travelers stranded. CBS San Francisco reported that the airport was under Mexican military protection that Sunday afternoon and that it remained unclear when flights would resume at the time of publication.

The disruption reached beyond the terminal. United said it canceled all flight operations that Sunday to and from Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that nine Puerto Vallarta-to-San Francisco arrivals were canceled, involving multiple airlines. That nine is the Chronicle’s count for one route on one day. It is not a total of every cancellation at the airport that day.

What the U.S. warning said

As quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle on February 22, 2026, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico said:

“Due to ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity, U.S. citizens in the named locations should shelter in place until further notice.”

That sentence comes from a news report quoting the embassy, not from the embassy’s original alert page. The instruction was tied to that period of unrest and was followed within days by a recovery update, described below.

How service recovered by February 25

A John Wayne Airport advisory dated February 25, 2026, relayed the embassy’s recovery information:

“Flight schedules have returned to normal in Guadalajara and many airlines have extra flights planned starting, February 24, in Puerto Vallarta. Both airports are secure and amenities are available.”

The same advisory suggested that travelers whose direct U.S. flight was canceled might consider a connection through another Mexican or U.S. city. Both points are statements from a dated advisory. They are not guarantees of seat availability or of current service.

Is the airport open now? How to check before you travel

The reporting available for this article does not confirm the airport’s operating status or whether a Puerto Vallarta-specific embassy alert is active on October 8, 2026. Treat the February items as a record of that event, and verify current conditions in this order:

  1. Your airline’s flight status. Search the exact flight number and date in the airline’s website or app. Confirm the connection city as well as the route, because a rerouted itinerary can change where you land.
  2. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico’s alerts for U.S. citizens. Look for any notice on Puerto Vallarta or Jalisco dated after February 2026.
  3. The airport’s own notices for Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (code PVR).
  4. Local authorities and recent news from the days before departure.

The U.S. Department of State’s worldwide caution dated July 22, 2026, gives the same general advice: check directly with carriers, monitor airline operations and follow local authorities. That caution addresses Middle East tensions and is not a Puerto Vallarta notice, so it does not tell you anything about Mexico’s Pacific coast.

What a cancellation can cost you

A sudden cancellation is a money problem before it is a travel problem. The main costs to plan for are these:

  • Rebooking fares. A same-day seat on another route or through another city can cost more than your original ticket. Compare the price of a rebooking against the value of a refund before you accept a new itinerary.
  • Extra nights, meals and transfers. The reporting describes travelers stranded at the airport. It does not say what carriers paid for hotels or meals, so assume you may need to cover these yourself until the airline confirms otherwise in writing.
  • Refund versus credit. The reporting does not describe the refund or rebooking terms any carrier offered for the February cancellations. Read the airline’s policy for canceled flights and ask whether you can request a cash refund rather than a credit.
  • Trip insurance and card benefits. If you bought trip-interruption coverage or booked with a credit card that offers travel protections, read the policy for which events it covers, how it defines a cancellation, and what documentation it requires.

If a cancellation happens to you, keep a record that will support any claim:

  • Screenshot the cancellation notice and the time it was shown.
  • Save every confirmation email and the airline’s rebooking offer.
  • Keep itemized receipts for hotels, meals and ground transport.
  • Note the date, time and confirmation number for every call or chat with the airline.
