Why Some U.S. Farmers Held Unsold Corn as Prices Slumped in 2024

The 2024 story of farmers holding corn was about selective timing, not a nationwide refusal to sell. Storage, local basis, cash needs and on-farm feed all mattered.

Some U.S. farmers held corn in on-farm bins in 2024 while waiting for stronger bids; they were not all refusing buyers or withholding every bushel. The choice traded the possibility of a better later sale for storage costs, cash-flow pressure and exposure to changing prices and local cash bids. USDA figures from 2026 offer later market context, not an update to the farmers interviewed in 2024.

What the 2024 report described

A Reuters report dated June 20, 2024 described farmers retaining some unsold corn as prices eased after a rally. It cited interviews with 15 grain farmers across the United States, not a survey showing what all U.S. farmers were doing. South Dakota farmer Eric Kroupa said dealers and ethanol plants were calling as prices neared a four-and-a-half-month high; he sold some corn and waited for better bids on the rest. The report said prices subsequently fell to just above three-year lows recorded in February 2024.

Kroupa summarized the situation this way: “There’s a lot of corn out there but it’s sitting in the farmers’ bins and not the end-users’ hands.” That is a description of grain held on farms, not evidence that farmers had no buyers. The report also described farmers using futures markets to hedge against further declines.

Not every decision to keep grain was simply a bet on higher prices. Indiana crop and cattle producer Samuel Ebenkamp had sold from one bin during an early-May rally but kept the rest to help ensure feed for his cattle through fall harvest. Some farmers also negotiated reduced late fees with seed and chemical suppliers to retain grain longer. These reported examples illustrate different constraints and tactics; they do not show that holding grain proved profitable.

What later USDA figures say—and what they do not

USDA’s September 2026 estimates show substantial corn stocks, but stocks are not a count of farmers refusing to sell. NASS reported that old-crop corn stocks on hand September 1, 2026 totaled 2.10 billion bushels, 35% above the same date in 2025. Of that amount, 787 million bushels were on farms, up 22%, and 1.31 billion were off farms, up 44%. NASS estimated June–August disappearance at 3.20 billion bushels, compared with 3.09 billion for the same period a year earlier. USDA NASS, Grain Stocks, September 2026.

The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture’s October 6, 2026 market report described USDA’s September 30 stocks estimate as nearly 2.1 billion bushels and a seven-year high. It said December 2026 corn futures fell 21¼ cents after the report and closed at $5.00¾. The report also cited USDA’s projected season-average farm price of $4.80 per bushel for 2026/27, versus $4.15 for 2025/26. Those are projections, not prices every farmer received or guaranteed future cash bids. The report included local basis at Mississippi River terminals, illustrating why a futures quote is not the same as a farm’s local cash price. Other 2026 figures are estimates or forecasts rather than final outcomes. USDA NASS’s March 31, 2026 report said farmers intended to plant 95.3 million acres of corn, down 3% from 2025, and reported March 1 corn stocks of 9.02 billion bushels, up 11% year over year. Planting intentions are survey-based expectations, not final planted acreage. USDA NASS, Prospective Plantings, March 2026. In a separate outlook updated September 18, USDA ERS reduced projected 2026/27 global coarse-grains production by 5.1 million metric tons, mainly because its projected U.S. corn production fell by 5.4 million metric tons. Forecasts can change as estimates are revised. USDA ERS, Feed Outlook, September 2026.

Why a farmer might store corn instead of selling it

Keeping grain can preserve the option to sell later, but it does not guarantee a better return. The relevant comparison is between a current local cash bid and the uncertain value of a later sale after costs and practical needs are considered.

  • Storage access and expense: A farmer needs suitable capacity and must weigh storage and handling costs against the potential benefit of waiting.
  • Cash-flow timing: A sale can provide money for operating expenses and other obligations. The 2024 report’s examples of suppliers reducing late fees show how payment arrangements could affect the timing decision.
  • Feed or other farm use: A livestock operation may retain grain to meet feed needs, as Ebenkamp did, rather than treating every bushel as available for sale.
  • Futures price and local basis: Futures are a standardized market reference. Basis—the difference between a local cash price and the relevant futures price—varies by location and time, so a futures move does not translate uniformly into a farm’s cash bid.
  • Delivery and transportation: Local demand, transport options and delivery constraints can affect the bid a producer can actually receive.

The National Corn Growers Association’s October 2025 discussion describes storage access and cost, basis and transportation as factors that vary geographically. It says weak or negative basis can reflect high local supply relative to demand, storage constraints or transportation costs; it is not a universal signal that every farmer should hold grain. National Corn Growers Association, October 2025.

What futures hedging can—and cannot—do

The 2024 Reuters report said some farmers used futures to hedge against further price declines. A hedge can reduce some exposure to futures-price movements, but it does not erase basis risk, storage expense, delivery constraints or the operational risks of managing grain. The examples in the report do not establish one strategy as right for every farm.

How to read market advice and price figures

In the University of Arkansas report on October 6, 2026, extension agricultural economics program associate Scott Stiles said: “it may be worth it to see the results of the October WASDE before making any corn marketing decisions.” That was advice attributed to him at that time, not a universal recommendation. USDA season-average farm-price projections, futures settlements, stocks estimates and local cash bids measure different things; none alone identifies the best sale date for a particular farm.
