No: the 2025 Senate proposal associated with Senator Mike Lee did not put national parks up for sale. It concerned certain federal public lands, and news coverage reported that national parks and other protected lands were excluded. Lee withdrew the provision on June 28, 2025, so it did not become an enacted sale mandate. A separate 2026 controversy concerns a proposed land exchange involving Yosemite National Park; it is not the same proposal, and the available account does not establish that a transfer occurred.
What did Mike Lee’s 2025 public-land proposal cover?
Utah Senator Mike Lee advanced a provision to sell some federal public lands during the 2025 Senate budget-reconciliation debate. It was not a bill to sell National Park System units. Contemporary reporting said national parks and other federally protected lands were excluded; the debate involved other federal public lands, including parcels near protected places. See Associated Press reporting and the Center for Western Priorities’ account.
The proposal changed as it moved through negotiations, so figures from one version should not be treated as applying to every draft. The Associated Press described a plan involving more than 3,200 square miles of federal land. That figure refers to the plan as described in its report, not necessarily the narrower late-June draft. The Center for Western Priorities said that late-June version would have allowed an individual to buy up to two square miles in a purchase, without a limit on the total amount that buyer could eventually acquire. That is the organization’s characterization of a draft that was subsequently withdrawn.
Did Congress pass the land-sale provision?
No. In June 2025, coverage reported that the provision faced revisions and that the Senate parliamentarian ruled it could not be included in the reconciliation bill. Lee withdrew it on June 28, 2025. The Center for Western Priorities reproduced his public explanation: “For that reason, I’ve made the decision to withdraw the federal land sales provision from the bill.” Lee also said he continued to believe the federal government owned too much land; that was his stated view, not an independent finding about federal land management.

Because the provision was withdrawn, it did not become an enacted sale mandate through that reconciliation bill. The sources do not establish a single reliable count of how many people opposed it or contacted Congress, so claims of a specific number should be treated cautiously unless tied to an identified survey or campaign dataset.
Could federal land near a national park be sold?
The distinction is between land inside a legally designated park unit and separate federal land nearby. The 2025 reporting described an exclusion for national parks and other protected lands, while the proposed sales concerned other federal public land. A parcel’s proximity to a park does not by itself make it part of the park. The sources cited here do not establish the legal status or sale eligibility of any particular neighboring parcel, so the withdrawn provision should not be read as proof that any specific area was for sale.

What is the separate Yosemite land-exchange controversy?
In September 2026, the Democratic minority of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee criticized an Interior proposal to exchange land in Yosemite National Park for private development. The committee statement said Interior requested $300,000 from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to facilitate the transfer. This is a different matter from Lee’s 2025 reconciliation provision: it is described as a proposed exchange, not a sale under that withdrawn provision.
The account available from the committee is a partisan statement, not the underlying Interior proposal. It does not establish that an exchange or transfer has occurred, and it is not enough to verify the proposal’s full terms or current administrative status. The committee’s statement is available at the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

What has Congress proposed since the 2025 dispute?
On May 11, 2026, Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced the introduction of the Public Lands Integrity Act. They said it would eliminate senators’ option to propose expedited public-land sales in a future reconciliation bill. The announcement establishes the bill’s introduction and its sponsors’ stated aim; the sources available here do not establish its later legislative status. See the senators’ announcement.

How to read claims about public-land “sell-offs”
- Check the land designation: Is the claim about a National Park System unit, another protected area, or other federal land?
- Check the action: A proposed sale and a proposed land exchange are different transactions.
- Check the date and draft: The 2025 provision changed during debate, and its acreage and purchase details varied by version.
- Check the status: Lee withdrew his provision in 2025; the separate 2026 Yosemite matter is described as a proposal, while the sources cited here do not establish its final status.
