That was a serious plant-level disruption, but it did not translate into an equal, sustained drop in national slaughter: Saturday production and cattle rerouting helped offset the lost output. Holcomb resumed processing in early December 2019.
How much beef processing capacity did the Tyson plant fire take offline?
The fire broke out mid-evening on Friday, August 9, 2019, at Tyson Fresh Meats’ Holcomb plant. The facility sustained extensive damage, including a partial roof collapse, and Tyson initially said it would be closed for an unknown period. USDA’s contemporaneous industry estimate put Holcomb’s capacity at about 30,000 fed cattle per week, or roughly 5–6% of weekly U.S. fed-cattle slaughter. USDA’s investigation report describes the estimate and the immediate disruption.
That percentage describes estimated plant throughput relative to weekly fed-cattle slaughter at the time. It does not mean that 5–6% of beef disappeared from store shelves, or that U.S. slaughter fell by that amount for the entire four-month closure. The distinction is between capacity unavailable at one plant and the amount the national system actually processed after other facilities adjusted.
How did other meatpackers make up for the lost slaughter capacity?
Initial daily estimates showed a decline in slaughter during the first week after the fire. Later federal inspection totals showed a more limited change: about 21,000 additional head were slaughtered on Saturday, and total steer and heifer slaughter for that week finished only about 1,000 head below the preceding week. Across the first three post-fire weeks, fed-cattle harvest was approximately 5,000 head higher than in the three weeks before the fire.

USDA said Tyson appeared to have sent a significant share of cattle that would have gone through Holcomb to its other plants. The agency’s figures show how added shifts and rerouting cushioned national throughput; they do not mean the closure had no market consequences. USDA’s report distinguishes the initial capacity shock from the slaughter totals recorded afterward.
Did the Tyson Holcomb fire cause beef prices to rise?
Different parts of the beef market moved in different directions. USDA reported that the Choice boxed-beef cutout—a wholesale value for a set of beef cuts—rose from $216.04 per hundredweight (cwt) in the fire week to $230.43 the following week and $239.87 in the second post-fire week. The cutout began falling in the third post-fire week and returned to pre-fire levels toward late September. USDA attributed the early rise in part to buyers seeking supplies ahead of Labor Day promotions, followed by slower buying once needs were covered and market participants had a clearer picture of the closure. The USDA report also found virtually no change in supermarket Labor Day advertised prices compared with similar 2018 promotions.

Meanwhile, negotiated dressed fed-cattle prices fell in the first post-fire week: USDA reported $169.81 per cwt, down 6%, while negotiated cash volume fell 27% week over week to 53,750 head. Some sales shifted to formula trading. These figures track a different market from boxed-beef values: the cutout reflects wholesale beef, while negotiated fed-cattle prices reflect sales of cattle to packers.
For the week ending August 24, 2019, the spread between the Choice boxed-beef cutout and dressed fed-cattle price reached $67.17 per cwt, according to the USDA investigation summary in a 2021 congressional hearing record. That was a fire-era peak, not an all-time record; the record says the spread was later exceeded during the COVID-19 disruption. The hearing record provides that qualification.

When did Tyson’s Holcomb plant reopen?
The federal investigation summary says Holcomb resumed processing in early December 2019, after a four-month closure. The initial announcement that the plant would be closed for an unknown period was made before the full repair and reopening timeline was known; it was not a permanent closure. The congressional-record summary gives the closure duration and reopening timing.

No—not according to Tyson’s August 13, 2026 network announcement. Tyson named Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas, as central facilities for its beef business. It said it plans to end operations at Joslin, Illinois, and Eagle Mountain, Utah, pursue the sale of Pasco, Washington, and move capacity to other locations. Tyson said the changes respond to historically tight cattle supplies and are intended to maintain similar cattle-harvesting levels with a more efficient network. Those are the company’s stated plans, not independent proof of future throughput. Tyson’s announcement says it will ramp back up a second shift at Amarillo as cattle become available.

The 2026 network changes are separate from the 2019 fire and its temporary outage. As wider context for current supply pressure, USDA announced up to $500 million in temporary support for eligible processors on June 30, 2026, citing tight cattle supplies and processor acquisition costs. USDA’s SPUR announcement describes that program. USDA Rural Development’s MPPEP Phase 4 was intended to support beef-industry capacity expansion and supply-chain diversification; its application window ran May 7 through August 7, 2026, and is closed. The program page gives its scope and application dates.
