Tyson Foods’ Madison, Nebraska, pork plant did not operate on Monday, April 24, 2023, after a fire the previous day. Tyson said it would send livestock normally received there to other Tyson pork facilities while it assessed damage and began repairs. The report described a temporary disruption—not a permanent plant closure.
What happened at the Madison plant
A fire occurred at Tyson Foods’ pork-processing plant in Madison, Nebraska, on Sunday, April 23, 2023. The facility did not run the following day. Tyson said operations would be limited for the rest of that week as the company assessed damage and started repairs, with production expected to resume gradually. Reuters, in a report published April 24, 2023 and republished by Successful Farming, did not report the cause of the fire.
How Tyson handled livestock deliveries
Tyson said it was diverting livestock normally received at Madison to other Tyson Foods pork facilities. The company said it did not expect the temporary change to disrupt its ability to meet customer needs. It did not name the receiving plants.
Al Juhnke, executive director of the Nebraska Pork Producers Association, said the other facilities could absorb the animals and keep livestock moving. He also noted that farmers need to deliver pigs on schedule. The report did not independently measure any resulting changes to supply, prices, or consumer availability.

What the report does—and does not—establish
- The interruption followed the April 23, 2023, fire; the plant did not operate on April 24, and Tyson described limited operations during the rest of that week.
- Tyson said livestock would be rerouted to other Tyson pork facilities, but did not identify them.
- The report did not give a cause for the fire or establish the plant’s present-day operating status.
