For most filers without self-employment income, TurboTax Desktop Deluxe is the cheaper choice. Intuit’s 2026 pricing page lists it at $84, against $134 for Desktop Home & Business, a $50 difference before state charges. Home & Business is the edition to evaluate if your return includes sole-proprietor or freelance income, because that is the workload Intuit builds it for. Neither edition has a published measure of time saved, and no official page shows that the higher-priced edition produces a bigger refund. The choice comes down to which features your return actually uses.
This comparison covers the Windows and Mac desktop software only. Intuit’s online editions follow a separate comparison and pricing model, and the online figures below do not apply to them.
Current desktop prices and what they leave out
Intuit’s official desktop pricing page, updated for 2026, lists the following figures:
| Item | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| TurboTax Desktop Deluxe (federal product) | $84 | Intuit desktop pricing page, 2026 |
| TurboTax Desktop Home & Business (federal product) | $134 | Intuit desktop pricing page, 2026 |
| Listed premium of Home & Business over Deluxe | $50 | Calculated from the two 2026 listed prices; Intuit does not publish this difference as its own figure |
| State e-file fee, per personal state return | $25 | Intuit desktop pricing page, 2026; does not apply to New York or Washington |
Both desktop editions include five federal e-files and one state download. State e-file is sold separately, so the included state download does not come with a free state e-file. A filer with two state returns should expect to pay the state e-file fee for each one that is filed electronically, subject to the New York and Washington exception above.

#1 Best Overall
Intuit’s Home & Business product page for tax year 2025 showed a $130 price. Use the 2026 pricing page for current comparisons, and treat the $130 figure as a 2025 product-page number only. Prices, offers and checkout totals can change, so confirm the price in your cart before you buy.
What each edition is built to do
Deluxe: deductions, credits and guided entry
Intuit positions Deluxe Desktop around finding deductions and credits. Its feature set includes a deduction and credit search, W-2 import, import of the prior year’s return, and added guidance for topics such as investments and rental property. If your return is mainly wage income with some deductible costs, such as mortgage interest, student loan interest, or charitable gifts, Deluxe covers that work without the business-specific sections.

Home & Business: self-employment and employer forms
Intuit recommends Home & Business for personal and self-employed returns. Its tax-year 2025 product page describes:
- Reporting for multiple sources of self-employment income, including independent contractors, freelancers, and sales of goods or services.
- Guidance on expense categories and deductions such as home office, vehicle, phone, supplies, and utilities.
- Quick Employer Forms, which create and e-file W-2s and 1099s for employees and contractors.
These are descriptions of software features. They do not decide whether any particular expense is deductible for you, and the software does not replace your own judgment about what qualifies.
Rank #3
Intuit’s desktop comparison labels Home & Business “Recommended for: Personal & Self-Employed.” This is company wording from the comparison page, not a quotation from a named person.
Side-by-side: which features matter for your return
| Decision factor | Desktop Deluxe | Desktop Home & Business |
|---|---|---|
| Intended return type | Personal return where deductions and credits are the main need | Personal return that also reports self-employment or freelance income |
| Self-employment income workflow | Not described as a feature on Intuit’s desktop comparison | Described for independent contractors, freelancers, and sales of goods or services |
| Expense guidance | Deduction and credit search | Expense categories including home office, vehicle, phone, supplies, and utilities |
| Employer and contractor forms | Not stated on the desktop comparison | Quick Employer Forms for W-2s and 1099s, with e-file |
| Listed federal price (2026) | $84 | $134 |
| Federal e-files included | Five | Five |
| State filing included | One state download; state e-file sold separately ($25 per personal state return, excluding New York and Washington) | One state download; state e-file sold separately ($25 per personal state return, excluding New York and Washington) |
Choosing between them
- Check your income types. If every income source is a W-2 or similar wage, and you have no freelance, contractor, or sole-proprietor income, Deluxe covers the return’s needs.
- Check whether you issue forms. If you pay contractors or employees and must prepare W-2s or 1099s, Home & Business includes the Quick Employer Forms feature. Deluxe does not list it.
- Compare the manual work. If you would otherwise sort business expenses, track vehicle use, or work out home office figures by hand, Home & Business is built to guide you through those categories. Deluxe will not walk you through them to the same degree.
- Add the full cost. Use the federal price for each edition, then add the state e-file fee for each state return you file electronically. Compare the total with the manual work you would avoid.
For a filer who does not need the self-employment features, the $50 listed premium is not justified by Intuit’s published material. For a filer who does need them, Home & Business may reduce manual work. Intuit’s pages do not quantify how many hours it saves or whether it changes the refund, so treat any payback as an estimate you make for your own return.

Does either edition actually save time?
No official page or independent test published in 2026 measures the time it takes to finish a return in Deluxe compared with Home & Business, or the refund difference between them. Any claim of a guaranteed time saving or a guaranteed bigger refund from the higher-priced edition is not supported. Time saved depends on how many business records you keep, how many forms you issue, and how familiar you are with the tax topics involved.

Keep the online editions separate
Intuit’s online comparison describes a separate online product path, and online pricing depends on your situation and the product you select. Intuit’s Deluxe Online page states that business income and 1099-NEC income fall outside its simple-return examples. Do not assume that a feature or limit on the online page applies to Deluxe desktop, or the reverse. Check the desktop product page for the exact edition you plan to buy.
Intuit states that features, services, support, prices, offers, terms and conditions may change. Verify the tax year, operating system, checkout price and state filing costs on the day you buy.
