As of October 8, 2026, the IRS says it processes faxed Forms SS-4 within 10 business days after receipt. That is a queue estimate—not proof that your fax arrived or a guarantee of when your EIN will be issued.
How long should you wait for an EIN by fax?
The IRS processing-status page currently lists 10 business days after receipt for faxed Forms SS-4. Check the IRS processing-status page for the latest estimate; it can change.
The IRS’s Form SS-4 instructions, revised December 2025, say a faxed EIN is generally returned within four business days. That general timing and the current 10-business-day queue estimate describe different things: use the live status page to judge how long to wait now. Neither tells you whether your specific fax reached the IRS. Count from the date the IRS received it, not simply the date you pressed send. IRS internal procedure says a fax received after 1 p.m. Eastern may be treated as received the next business day.
What to check before you resend Form SS-4
- Check the current processing estimate. If fewer than 10 business days have passed since the likely receipt date, wait through the current window before submitting again.
- Verify the fax number for your location. For an applicant whose legal residence, principal place of business, or principal office or agency is in a U.S. state or the District of Columbia, the IRS filing table lists 855-641-6935. If the applicant has no such U.S. location, the listed number is 855-215-1627 from within the United States or 304-707-9471 from outside the United States. Confirm the numbers on the live IRS Form SS-4 filing page before faxing; routing information can change.
- Review the copy you sent. Check that applicable requested information is complete and readable, any required signature is present, and the return fax number is correct. The IRS says it cannot issue an EIN without the applicable requested information. Its internal procedure describes requesting missing information by return fax when a fax number is provided, or by mail otherwise. That does not establish why a particular application is delayed.
- Check your fax service’s transmission record. A successful sender-side transmission report may help you confirm what your service recorded, but it does not establish that the IRS received or processed the application.
When should you submit the application again?
If the current IRS processing window has passed and you still have no EIN, IRS internal procedural guidance directs staff to advise resubmission. Before doing so, correct any errors or omissions and verify the destination number and return fax number.

Do not send the same application by fax, mail, and online all at once. The IRS instructs applicants to use only one application method for each entity to avoid receiving more than one EIN. It also limits EIN issuance to one per day across application methods. If you resend after the waiting period, use one method and keep a copy of the application and transmission record.
Could you use another way to apply?
The IRS recommends applying online when possible. The routes differ in eligibility and timing:
Rank #2
| Method | Who can use it | IRS timing or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Online | Applicants with a U.S. or U.S.-territory legal residence, principal business, or principal office or agency; the principal officer or other responsible party needs a valid SSN, ITIN, or EIN. | The IRS says an EIN can be issued immediately after validation. Some electronic tax functions may take up to two weeks to recognize it. |
| Fax | Applicants filing Form SS-4 to the IRS fax destination applicable to their location. | The current IRS status page lists 10 business days after receipt; the December 2025 instructions say fax returns are generally within four business days. |
| Phone | International applicants whose principal place of business is outside the United States; domestic applicants cannot use this route. | Call 267-941-1099, Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time. Confirm current hours and routing in the IRS EIN application guidance. |
| Applicants who choose to send Form SS-4 by post. | The current IRS status page lists processing within 30 days of receipt. The December 2025 instructions say to allow approximately four weeks for delivery of the EIN; these are distinct estimates. |
For mail, use the Cincinnati EIN Operation or EIN International Operation address that applies to you, as listed in the Form SS-4 instructions. Do not switch methods while the original application is still within the current processing window unless the IRS directs you to do so.

Follow the IRS instructions for the specific return or payment due. The IRS says that if a return is due before the EIN arrives, you can enter “Applied For” and the application date in the EIN field. Tax deposits due before the EIN arrives have separate instructions, so do not assume the return procedure applies to a deposit. Do not substitute an SSN for the EIN on a tax return. See the IRS EIN application guidance for the applicable instructions.
